Let these ATLANTIC SIRENS drown you in a sea of love?… You do not have to be a Ulysses, tied to the mast of your ship in order to fall victim to the beauty of these Sirens. German photographer Stefan Soell takes us on a photographic excursion to Portugal’s southern Atlantic coast, together with eight models of exceptionally striking and distinctive looks. These Sirens are portrayed frolicking in the foaming surf, and playing in the winds and sands of this wild coastline, and this enhances their natural eroticism. Stefan Soell is a master at capturing their joyful but provocative and enticing play. The photographs for this book were taken over a period of five years, during long stays in the far South Western area of Portugal. The lonely, undeveloped Costa Vicentina in the west, the Cabo de São Vicente in the east, and the rugged cliffs of the Algarve are one of the last sections of natural coastline in Europe. Stefan Soell chose the late autumn of October and November as the season best suited to these photo sessions. In these months, the sun is already very low and gives off a warm, soft light. The models spent a long time in the area, which enabled Stefan Soell to take pictures in the best possible weather and lighting conditions. For the optimal interaction of sun, cloud and tide, the ideal window of opportunity was often only very short. Due to the strong fluctuations in the tides, some locations could only be reached on a few days in a month. Stefan Soell used a Canon EOS 1DX MKII, with 24-70 mm and 70-200 mm lenses, and a Sony Alpha 6300 with a Zeiss 16-70 mm lens. Usually, the locations could only be reached on foot, which can take a long time, so having light, portable equipment was important, as it enabled longer coastal expeditions to succeed, and allowed maximum flexibility when taking pictures. All photos were taken exclusively with natural light, without additional brighteners or reflectors. German photographer Stefan Soell began to take photos at the age of 15, and soon landscape and portrait photography had become his favourite subjects. In addition to his astonishing talent at choosing the ideal background and selecting key details, he also has the rare knack of capturing ideal lighting conditions. Review: Fantastic Photography and Sand Sculptures - I love Stefan Soell's work, I have all his books. I especially like his outdoor photography, like in this book. Mr. Soell has an amazing ability to use natural light to create perfect images. Besides the beautiful women and fantastic locations, there were also some amazing sand sculpture in some of the photos. I emailed Mr. Soell to ask him who had made them and he said he did them himself! He also gave me a link to his Instagram page (which I can't post here) where I was able to see more of the sand sculptures that didn't make it into the book. Stefan Soell is an amazing artist as well as an incredible photographer! Another nice thing about his Instagram page are the fanciful narrative he added to the photos in his comments. I wish these and the other sand sculptures had been included in the book. The book does have some inspiring quoes as well as interviews with each model. All together, another great book. Review: WOW - these photos are very much erotic art people from other countries are very open minded and see nudity as beauty not something that should be censored and covered up, people from the U.S. are very prudish and want anything to do with nudity.

Matte paper disappoints on an otherwise beautifully shot book
What I appreciate most about Stefan Soell's photography, beyond the lovely ladies and cinematic outdoor backgrounds, are the resulting warm skin tones and vivid colors. But unike his previous books, Atlantic Sirens is printed on a matte (non-gloss) paper. This makes skin tones less life-like, colors less vibrant. In an reply in an email I sent Mr. Soell about the paper, he said "Atlantic Sirens demand an honest, natural paper“. I can respect the artist’s choice of paper. Unlike Soell's previous books, Atlantic Sirens is organized by model. This books profiles eight beautiful models: Vika, Johannsdottir. Susann, Jana, Hanna, Anna, Alisa and cover model Olga.

Uninhibited sexuality at its most natural
Just love beautiful women photographed au naturel in the great out of doors, and in this case at the seashore. Unlike his other collections, here each model gets her full profile of photos in order, and they are all first rate. Beauty without exploitation, and without any vulgarity: priceless!

Beautiful Nudes in a Sensual Landscape.
This is one of Stefan Soell's more personal bodies of work. It's as much about the location as it is about the models. It was important that Stefan capture the purity of what he says is the last natural, unchanged coast in southern Europe (Portugal), where there are no signs of development, no buildings, no streets, no telegraph poles. Just skimming through Atlantic Sirens, its easy to understand and appreciate his feelings for this place - its a dramatic, brooding landscape, massive black cliffs, golden sand, and dark, tempestuous water exploding into white spray. Into this he throws eight beautiful women, young, naked, and natural, each from a distinct realm of Europe: Jana from Czech Republic, Johannsdottir from Iceland, Susann from Germany, Anna from Poland, Alisa from Hungary, Hanna from Canada/Portugal, Vika and Olga from Ukraine. This is a large format, thick, beautiful book. It includes eight sections - each devoted to one model along with an interview about her life, her background, her thoughts and impressions. Stefan's photography is astounding, absolutely masterful. His models are perfectly proportioned, long-haired, and seem delighted to pose nude amidst such natural grandeur. But there is a slight hint of reservation, at least when compared to his previous works. Perhaps a better word would be, maturation. The content, the color, even the texture of the book itself seems less processed and more natural. There's a sense of effortlessness, of true intimacy. The posing is more relaxed, more natural. There are a few intoxicatingly erotic images, but for the most part, the imagery is simple testimony to the natural beauty of both the girls and Iberian coastline. The book's paper is softer, more pulpy - gone are the glossy finish and digitally perfected colors in his previous books. This is Stefan Soell changing directions, at least for the moment. And it's pure magic. Atlantic Sirens is an exciting, sensual vision of the female nude. It's also an artist's faithful tribute to one of Europe's most beautiful an sacred places.

Gran Fotografo

Book was ok
Positives - large print, beautiful models, hardcove, beautiful sceneries. Negatives - could do with better/clearer close up photos of the models. Also would have been better if the book had glossy pages.

Disappointing.
I’ve been a big fan of Soell over the years and have bought all of his previous books, but this one is a massive disappointment. The playful variety and composition of previous is gone and all we have is page after page after page of bemused ‘sirens’ standing awkwardly on a beach and for the most part looking like they’d rather be somewhere else. What doesn’t help either is that it’s printed on flat matte paper stock that’s actually unpleasant to touch and gives the photos the aura of washed out Polaroids from the 1980s. I won’t be buying any more of his output sight unseen. For the rest of you - caveat emptor with this one.

very disappointed with the printing quality as a fan of the author
the printing quality is so bad, not clear at all. It is not comparable to Stefan's previous books at all. I have to return it although I want to collect all his books. Pity!!!
