what's the difference with this model and the R-12sw reference powered?

The R-12SW is no longer in production and the R-120SW is the current production model in that series. The finish is the major difference as it is the same specification.

What kind of subwoofer cable does it need? Anything special?

It just needs an RCA Cable. I'm using the Amazon Basics 25ft RCA Subwoofer cable and it is working fine.

Sounds like you may have two different model subwoofers. This R-120SW has a copper colored woofer cone and the rest of the cabinet is black.
