Early days but after fiddling with the settings, the welds are good, very easy to use and no gas!

This is a kit to get you started with gasless welding. For the pedants, no, this isn't a 'MIG' welder. MIG stands for Metal Inert Gas welding, and uses an Inert Gas to keep the weld free from impurities in the air. Instead of an awkward gas bottle, this machine uses a special wire with a flux in it, so it's more like the Manual Metal Arc (MMA) or 'Stick'' welding process. Because it continuously feeds the wire like a MIG welder, it tends to get called gasless MIG welding. The welding process does feel pretty much like MIG welding, and the end result looks like stick welding, with flux left around the joint. With that out of the way, What's in the box? Pretty much everything you need, including both a 'MIG'-style torch and a clamp for stick-style electrodes. You don't get any safety gear. I'm fine with that, as welding gear is very personal, and the stuff that you get with most starter sets can be pretty rubbish. I'd rather pay for the tools, and choose my own gear. So you'll need a welding mask and a pair of gloves. Ideally a leather apron unless you like the holy-jeans and burnt legs look. The machine is impressively small. Since it doesn't include all the gubbins, pipes and valves for the gas supply, it's much smaller then a MIG welder and the cable for the torch is more flexible too. I'm moderately competent at MIG welding, and have basic TIG skills, so I'm not a total beginner. However, it's been many years since I actually did any welding, so I approached this as if I was a beginner. It's actually not difficult. Practise on some scrap to get the right settings, and there's not really much to it. Just don't hold the parts together by hand! Like most jobs, the preparation makes all the difference. Cleanliness and accuracy before you turn the welder on will pay dividends. I probably wouldn't use this to assemble a motorbike frame or a bridge, but for fixing broken hinges, tacking bits together for my flight simulator rig, and mending garden furniture, it's great.

Well impressed with this little welder. The photo is first use at 120 amps (no practice). Haven't tried the MMA or the tig yet. Easy to use and set up although it feels a bit flimsy. I was a fabricator for the last 50 years used to heavy industrial welders and I am happy with it.
