Hit Or Miss Root Was A Hit For Me.
I purchased this as an homage to my father, who grew horseradish. When he did. it grew all over the yard because it wasn't contained in any way. He passed away and for the next couple decades, my mother pulled it up whenever and wherever it came up. Many people have complained about this product not growing or whatever. My root came wrapped nicely. I took it out of the supplied wrapping, cleaned it and wrapped it in a damp paper towel in a plastic bag and set it in a cool area. A few days later, I put the root in a flower pot. The pot was set on some seed heating mats along with the other seeds I am growing. Three days later there was a little spike of green leaf. More have followed and now there are lots of leaves which would seem to indicate healthy growth. Right now there are leaves that are over 6 inches tall and "baby" leaves continue to pop up. In the midst of the "snowmagedden" that struck the east coast, this horseradish plant has been a welcome sign of life and the spring to come. I am more than satisfied and can't wait to see the whole thing grow bigger, eventual harvest and use. Dad would be happy.

A new horseradish grower
The root has begun to grow green leaves. So far, so good.

Would 100% recommend
Roots came and were absolutely beautiful. I received three roots. One was smaller (about four inches and a little wider than finger thickness) and the other two were 4.5 and almost 6 inches and extremely thick. They were healthy and still moist even with a few day delay at the post office due to a snow storm. Can’t wait to get them in a pot to hopefully grow some more.

It’s ok
I ordered a single order to plant on my back yard. Received 3 pieces. One was in a fork shape (the best one, see photo). It had a healthy appearance, the top was easily identified by tiny new white sprouts. Just what I needed. The second piece was a cube shaped chunk without easily identifiable top. It had ok appearance with some small moldy spots. The last piece (it’s on the background of the photo), is a long and skinny half rotten piece. The entire surface has severe rot. There’s no healthy root seen. There are deep rotten areas all over not just mold here and there. Overall, I am glad I got at least one good healthy specimen to plant.

FOUR YEARS LATER...
Semi-experienced gardener checking in... I have harvested, chopped, and replanted these roots so many times that they now take up over 20 square feet of my yard! They're super tough and survive Zone 7's extreme heat and cold with no problem. Whatever rain we get seems to be plenty for them, but I do hit them with the hose occasionally when it's really hot and dry. Otherwise, they seem to thrive on neglect. By far the easiest food plant I've ever grown... Honestly, this is probably the best thing I have ever bought through Amazon. It's a gift that keeps on giving! The leaves are delicious, but I use them as a trap crop for beetles to keep the little buggers out of my other greens. And of course the roots are AMAZING. Horseradish is one of the greatest flavors known to humankind, and pulling up pounds of these bad boys to make more sauce has become one of the highlights of my year! (I haven't weighed a harvest yet, but I will update after the next one.) Bonus: they also get cute flowers that my bee buddies love! 10/10 would recommend. Buy these lil beasts and toss em in a sunny spot, you won't regret it... unless you hate flavor, in which case why are you even reading this?

I am a fairly experienced gardener and I was very disappointed that the piece sent to me was large old and woody and simply rotted in the ground. It is a pity as I wanted a horseradish plant.
