Can you use the backside as a hammer? Or is it too thin?

If by hammer, you mean to pound in tent stakes and the like, then sure. If you mean hammer to pound in nails in your cabin in the woods, then no. Unless you have excellent accuracy in your swing, and large head nails, not practical for that.

Is it molle compatible?

No. The scabbard that comes with it is not MOLLE compatible. It has loops to thread a belt through it but not MOLLE
