When you rest this on your counter, it has a small lip that it rests on, which has a shallow profile and it is plastic, or some plastic material like the handle is made of. I am not the biggest fan but on the other hand it doesn't tangle in your hair. It heats pretty fast, the slick barrel curls pretty well but shorter hair can slip through pretty easy.
