how many come with this product? can it be taped aswell to keep further in place?

I am not sure about your question: how many come with this product. They sold each individually if that's what U ask. U don't have to tape and that's why they required U to provide ring size so they want it to be snug fit. Also U can turn it either way to benefit your problem. I hope that I answer your question.

Will this work on a thumb?

Might work on a thumb. The Oval 8 splints are 1 1/2" long; short thumb might not work. Why not call the manufacturer; they are very helpful.

I have trigger thumb. Do I put the band right on the joint or above or below it?

That is not an issue. Just put it right on your thumb. It will protect the joint

What are these made out of?

The Oval-8 Finger Splint is made out of mold injected plastic.
