Review: Useful study cards - I was concerned that the flash cards may be difficult to read or not sturdy enough to carry with me in a jacket pocket. I was pleased with the small size of the cards yet with easily readable print, and with the strength of construction. I find the brief examples of use of the kanji printed on the cards helpful and instructive. The clever mnemonic pictures are occasionally useful as well. Overall, I'm very happy with this product. I intend to buy the second set, and would recommend these cards to an intermediate student of Japanese who has a working knowledge of hiragana and katakana.

A great review tool. You'll need something else for grammar
I've used these "Tuttle" flash card for Chinese and personally I find them very helpful for review, but not for learning. Even though English pronunciation is included on the cards, in order to get the full use out of these cards you should already be able to read Hiragana. Fortunately there is a Hiragana set of cards in this line that will probably pop up in recommended products. Like with the Chinese cards I like the large font, the size of the card itself, and the carrying ring it comes with. It makes transporting them easy and the font makes them very readable. These are also include a little teaching aid to remember how the character goes, such as showing that Ichi, 一 looks like ONE finger. I also think it is a nice touch that the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Text) level is printed on these cards, however keep in mind that the JLPT starts with 5 at its lowest and 1 at the highest. One thing I don't like about these is that unlike the Chinese cards, the Japanese series doesn't provide sample sentences, so they do not function as any sort of grammar instruction or reinforcement. Instead these just provide extra vocab words, including both on-yomi and kun-yomi readings, which is vitally important when learning the multiple ways a character can be pronounced and used. But you will have to use these cards in conjunction with another learning method or tool to really understand how to properly use this vocabulary.

Great study tool
I love these flash cards for studying kanji! The ring makes them very convenient to study in rapid succession. It is a great addition to your Japanese learning tool box.

Very Helpful Cards
I was in a JPN of 101 class and these were very helpful for memorizing, especially since they have the onyomi (chinese sound) and kunyomi (japanese sound). But if you are entirely unfamiliar with Japanese the different sounds might be confusing, since it's fairly contextual, as I have learned. Also if you don't know hiragana it'd be confusing, although I'm not sure why someone would choose to learn kanji before hiragana ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. These definitely improved my kanji quiz scores though.

Good cards, small binder ring.
Love these cards! Kanji on the front and detailed explanations on the back. Be warned however that the binder ring they give you is a little small. All 200 cards WILL fit, but they are pretty cramped.

Incomplete card set
This set of cards is incomplete and does not fully complement the Tuttle Essential Japanese Kanji Vol.1. 131 characters covered through chapter 10 and the book covers 250 characters. There are no cards for chapter 10 and there are many missing from previous chapters. I will have to buy the second set covering 201-400 cards to complete the book (I hope it does). Tuttle should have designed and organized the set of cards to follow the book by each chapter, but for the most part they were mixed up. Good information on the cards and I generally like Tuttle products, but a little more thought needs to go into this.

Great for beginners!
I'm a total newbie to the Japanese language but so far these have made my first 30 kanji very easy to learn and memorize! If I have any complaints it's that I wish the cards were a little sturdier, they are starting to tear where the metal ring holds them.

This is for a gift, so I can't comment so much on the teaching qualities of this kit. I picked this because I know the publisher, I read great reviews and I think handy cards are a great tool for learning and revising, so I was sure it was good quality in all sense. I see that this Kanji flash cards kit is really well made: presentation, printing, content... I think it's helpful and a lovely gift for Japanese language learners.

The sample phases and expressions on the back of the cards help build up vocabulary - something smartphone-based flashcards apps won't do. I've owned a number of language learning materials from Tuttle over the years and this is the same great quality.

Great product, very informative flash cards that also show different combinations with pictured kanji. I've yet to listen to the audio files, but will do so soon.
