Looks Great, But Rotten Inside
I’ve seen too many companies operate like this lately, and GE seems to be following the same playbook. I ironically bought this from Amazon — and this ice maker isn’t cheap. On the outside it looks sleek, but inside it’s completely rotten: false warnings, random stops and starts, terrifying squeals, and general unreliability. Customer service was a complete disaster. I was just a month past the one-year warranty, and the representative refused to help, offered no solutions, and eventually hung up. No accountability, no concern — just cold corporate scripts protecting GE’s profits. This appliance is all style and no substance. Expensive, flashy, and fundamentally broken. If you value your time, or money, do not buy this. GE clearly cares more about profit than quality or customer experience. Amazon too? They haven't weighed in!

AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
WHEN THE ICE MAKER WORKS IT WAS GREAT. SUPER DISAPPOINTING THAT IT ONLY WORKED FOR ABOUT A MONTH AFTER PURCHASE. CUSTOMER SERVICE HAS BEEN A NIGHTMARE. THEY EXPECT YOU TO KEEP A HUGE BOX LYING AROUND THE HOUSE FOR AN INDEFINATE PERIOD OF TIME SO THAT YOU CAN SEND IT BACK TO THEM IN ITS ORIGINAL PACKAGING SO THEY WILL HONOUR THE WARRANTY. I AM ON THE HOOK FOR 'DAMAGES' THAT MIGHT HAPPEN WHEN I AM MAILING IT BACK TO THEM TO FIX IT. IT WEIGHS ALMOST 50 POUNDS. I CAN NOT FIND ANY LOCAL PLACE TO WARRANTY IT. NO ONE FIXES SMALL APPLIANCES ANY MORE. IT IS VERY NICE LOOKING, BUT WHAT THEY ARE DOING ON THE INSIDE OF IT, IT IS SUPER UNRELIABLE. THEY ALSO SHIPPED ME A DIFFERENT PRODUCT THAN THEY DELIVERED TO ME. THE INVOICE DOESN'T MATCH THE PRODUCT. I AM TRYING TO GET THAT FIXED BEFORE I SEND THEM ANYTHING. BRUTAL CUSTOMER SERVICE. DO NOT PURCHASE

Owned ours 3+ years & love it!
We’ve had this ice maker for a few years now and we really have very few (if any) real complaints. It makes ice exactly like you get at Chik-Fil-A and other fast food places. It’s small pellets of ice. It makes ice fast. No odd tastes or discolored ice. Pretty straightforward operation. We fill gallon ziplock bags full of this ice and stock the freezer with it as a backup to our regular fridge /freezer ice maker. We have a good ice maker in our GE Profile refrigerator freezer but we are a family of four (two teens) and we are all ice water & iced drink fiends. We go through so much ice - especially in summer. We carry large 40+ ounce canteens and our kids take them to school daily & keep them on their nightstands to drink all evening & overnight if they get thirsty. I keep ice water in a Corksickle tumbler and carry it next to me morning & night. The freezer ice maker sometimes just can’t keep up so we use this machine to replenish. It’s great for taking bags of ice for coolers on trips too. My younger daughter enjoys just eating the ice like some snack on popcorn. It takes up a sizable amount of counter space so small kitchen folks beware. We have the space and love it. Don’t hesitate. This is one fantastic ice maker — take it from someone with years of experience owning one.

Crunchable Perfection at Home – A Must for Nugget Ice Lovers!
If you’re a fan of the soft, crunchy nugget ice found at old-school soda fountains or your favorite drive-thru, the GE Profile Opal Nugget Ice Maker delivers that same experience—right in your own kitchen. I’ve been using this machine for some time now, and I can confidently say it’s one of the best home ice makers on the market, if you’re willing to commit to some routine care. ⸻ Pros: • Perfect Nugget Ice: This machine produces the iconic soft, chewable ice that’s incredibly satisfying. Whether you’re making cocktails, iced coffee, or just love munching ice (despite what your dentist says!), the quality is exceptional. • Quiet Operation (Relatively): Compared to commercial or restaurant-grade ice makers, this unit is impressively quiet. There’s a low hum while it runs and a gentle sound when ice drops into the bin. • Thoughtful Design: Comes with a scoop, a front drip tray for catching condensation, and a sleek, modern look that fits well in most kitchens. • Self-Recycling Water System: Melted ice drains back into the reservoir and is reused—efficient and convenient. • Decent Water Capacity: The gravity-fed reservoir holds up to one gallon of water. I strongly recommend using distilled water to reduce mineral buildup and prolong the machine’s life. • Party Prep Friendly: Under normal usage, a full ice bin will provide enough ice for about 6–8 twelve-ounce beverages. When hosting guests for drinks and light bites, I like to fill gallon-size freezer bags about 3/4 full of ice in advance and store them in the freezer. This ensures I have plenty of nugget ice on hand for the entire gathering and can keep the ice bin replenished for everyone to enjoy their favorite cold beverage. ⸻ Cons (But Manageable): • Requires Routine Maintenance: Like all freestanding ice machines, it needs regular cleaning and descaling. This includes the water tank, the internal reservoir beneath the ice bin, and periodic sanitizing. You’ll want to plan a full clean every 45 to 75 days, depending on usage. • Descaling Frequency Varies: If you’re using tap water, the hardness of your local water supply will affect how often you’ll need to descale. Harder water will lead to faster buildup, so regular monitoring is key. Using distilled water significantly reduces this concern. • Not a Freezer: The ice is stored in an insulated bin, not a freezer compartment. It will slowly melt if unused, but thankfully, the machine refreezes it using the recycled water. • Minor Condensation Drips: When removing the ice bin, you may notice a bit of condensation on the bottom. The included drip tray handles this well, but it’s worth keeping an eye on. ⸻ Final Thoughts: This ice maker is a game-changer for nugget ice enthusiasts. Yes, there’s a little maintenance involved—but in return, you get restaurant-quality ice at home. As my grandmother used to say, “Anything worth having is a result of hard work.” In this case, the “work” is light and completely manageable. If you’re prepared for basic upkeep and use distilled water when possible, this is a fantastic investment for your kitchen or home bar. I highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates the joy of perfectly crunchy ice.
