🕵️♂️ Dare to Play the Game of Survival!
Manhunt is a gripping action/adventure horror game for the PS2 that plunges players into a dark narrative filled with urban horror and intense gameplay. With high production values and a unique blend of sardonic humor, this single-player experience challenges you to confront the depths of human depravity.

Exploring the depths of human depravity
Way back around the time of E3, you may recall that Take Two(The people behind Grand Theft Auto:Vice City) announced a game called Manhunter. Without going into detail, the press release referred to a game that "explored the depths of human depravity" and, judging by the exceedingly nasty details we've happened upon, they weren't just whistling Dixie, muchachos. Manhunt concerns itself with the exploits of a horrendous psychopath known only as "The Director". This pompously titled buffoon gets his kicks by taking control of an entire, derelict city, letting loose some hapless slob in said urban rathole, and watching as everyone else attempts to murder the poor sap. The poor sap naturally being you. Yep, like some mutant hybrid of Escape From New York, The Game, and Surf Nazis Must Die, you play the lonewolf hero stumbling through a nightmare world of crazed gang-members queuing up to cut you a new one. Gameplay is said to resemble the stealth-stylings of Metal Gear Solid, though with considerably more brutal action. You play convicted murderer and presumed good 'ol boy James Earl Cash who's whisked from Deathrow at the last minute to provide sport for the Director, who watches the action via the various CCTV cameras posted around the city. Apparently sound is at least as important in dodging your pursuers as vision; you can throw objects to send them off to investigate, and an on-screen sound meter shows just how much noise you're making; even your footsteps can give you away if you're not careful. In a twist worthy of an episode of 24, you'll also be given codec style hints and advice from - The Director! That's just crazy. On top of such post-modern prankery, Manhunt sounds to be riddled with quite the queasiest, most disturbing examples of casual violence we've seen since, well, ever. Guns figure in the game, naturally, but apparently they're tricky to get your hands on, which means that for most of the game you'll be battering your enemies into submission with baseball bats and suchlike. Suchlike being, reportedly, plastic bags with which to suffocate people, and shards of glass for those days when you're fresh out of flickknives; the killing is even shown from a grainy, CCTV footage viewpoint. Lovely stuff. This game is not for kids!!!

A violent masterpiece
I now own this game on PS2, and digitally on the PS5/Xbox series X. It's that good. I don't think this game would ever be remade because of how uncensored the violence is so I've invested in three copies. It is stealth horror at it's finest with a great plot. Also, it's a fairly long game - on the hardest mode playing stealth it probably took me 15 - 18 hours, on the easiest modes it may be more like 10/11 hours. Masterpiece

Manhunt
Manhunt is infamous for being one of the most violent videogames ever made and does it deliver, does it ever. You play as James Earl Cash a convict who was sentenced to death, the state killed you, but now you have been given a second chance. You must compete in a bloodsport for camera to win your freedom where the more brutal your kills are the more likely you are to win. Primarily a stealth game Manhunt makes you use a variety of makeshift weapons such as plastic bags, broken glass and barbed wire to kill your foes, bloody and brutal, definitely not for kids. However the game can be quite difficult in places and sometimes stealth isnt an option, in which hand to hand combat must be used, however it isn't very good. Manhunt shouldn't be missed, but it shouldn't be anything more than a time filler.

a disappointment from the makers of gta
A game i thought coming from the makers of gta would truly be another masterpiece but with awkward controls and dodgey angles trying to play this stealth game i found near impossible as it normally turned into me getting stuck running into a wall and beaten up by a bunch of mindless thugs. im no noob when it comes to stealth games but i seem to stugle with this. if only this was avoided this new take on a gory stealth couldve been great fun but instead has turned into a abyss of stress.

After the first thrill there's..nothing
You play James Earl Cash. You're a convict and sentenced to death. But instead of an lethal injection you received some kind of narcotic. However, you wake up in a dirty hall and a voice tells you that you have to play the main role in a snuff movie. Your task: Do whatever you're told - survive - find a way out of the trap you're in. Many people (even the text on the back of the DVD case) say that your maintask is to "stay alive". That's simply not true in any way. Most of the time in the game it goes like this "Kill all enemies in this area. When you're finished the gate to the next area will be opened." The first half of the game consist out of that - nothing more. You get a few minor tasks in these missions, like for example saving people by not being spotted by the enemy, or by guiding certain people threw one of the areas and prevent that they get spotted or killed, but in the end it's always the same. You get certain weapons or stuff like plastic bags, glass sharps, knifes, axes, machetes, guns, tranquliser guns and so on. Most of the time you have to use these weapons in order to sneak up to your enemy and kill it. This triggers a cutscene in which you can see how the protagonist kills his victim (using the machete for example will result in the protagonist slashing it into the hips of the enemy and cutting its head off. The player can throw the head afterwards in order to get the other enemy's attention). You can also get more violent sequences by sneaking up to the enemy longer. At the beginning this is optional, but in one of the levels you'll be forced to trigger the most violent sequence, otherwise your enemies will keep on respawning all the time. So, the main aspect of the game is sneaking and stalking. But it's als possible to use guns and to fight one-on-one. But you won't do it often, since it's useless. Especially later on when the enemies become stronger you barely have a chance to escape a one-on-one battle. The battle-system sucks and the controls are horrible and clumsy. It's the same with the aiming system when you're in a gun fight (and certain levels force you to use ONLY guns) - the game has a auto-aim function. That's nice because the free aiming in the game sucks the most. Nevertheless, imagine this situation: Two enemies stand in front of you (you're hiding in the shadows and can't bee seen). Between both of them is a gasoline can which explodes if you shoot it. Would be a good idea to do so, right? Forget about it. The auto-aim function forces you to aim at one of the enemies. You'll have to deal with them one by one. The most annoying thing about the game is how damn boring it becomes. After you've finished the 9th of 20 stages you start realising that the game will offer nothing more. It's always the same. You see an enemy, you make some noise, the enemy comes in order to look for you, you hide in the shadows, the enemy turns you it's back, and you slaughter it down. Repeat. In some stages you have to use guns, which is boring as well. Always the same, no tactic, no fun. But the games does also have some positive aspects like for example the fantastic voice acting of the certain characters or the (at the beginning) real refreshing and sinister story. Closing comment: The game is too long, because although there are some story twists the game mechanics offer nothing new. You always do the same, only the weapons change. The controls are horrible and the difficulty combined with the saving system is sometimes just annoying. Some parts of the game are easy as hell, other parts are so damn hard and frustrating that you want to eat your controller. I guess if the game wasn't that violent and disturbing, noone would have payed attention. And I guess it's the same with Manhunt 2 which is now about to come out. Violence is not a part of the atmosphere, it's part of how the game is supposed to work at all - and that's a rather sad fact. And by the way: this is no horror game at all.
