undefinedIn 1979, Team Lotus faced problems with Type 80. The car showed severe "porpoising", a phenomenon in which the car bounces up and down at the first bump on the road. As a solution to the problem, Peter Wright came up with the idea of separating the monocoque chassis from the downforce-creating body. Having verified the rightness of this concept the following year with the Type 86 test car, Peter Wright and Martin Ogilvie went on to develop Type 88 on the same principles for the 1981 season. In this "twin-chassis" construction, the outer sprung body structure carryng the aerodynamic load is called the primary chassis while the conventional inner chassis structure servers as the secondary chassis, effectively creating a twin chassis design. Regulations required that any part having an aerodynamic influence had to be ed to the entirely sprung part of the car. So this in turn allowed to define the outer sprung body structure as part of the chassis. For 1981, a new rule required at least 6cm of ground clearance at rest. The outer sprung primary chassis allowed to meet this new requirement at rest while downforce at speed would push the body down, further helping promote downforce.
