I recently purchased a couple of different drain enzyme/bacteria products to try on my older homes pipes. Given the difficulty of actually seeing inside a pipe to see if the products actually do anything, I decided to conduct a simple test to see if either the Natural Rapport or the Bio-Clear product actually decomposed potential drain pipe gunk. The details of the testing follow below, but the bottom line is, the Bio-Clear does seem to be able to breakdown organic materials and also may be breaking down bar soap While its not possible for me to examine its efficiency inside the drain pipes, I do have some confidence that this product does decompose material that may end up in my drain pipes. I was curious about whether any of the drain enzyme products actually might work to clean my old drain pipes, so I decided to conduct a simple test of two bacteria/enzyme products. My test setup was as follows: Three identical glass jars were filled with warm water. One jar would be my control and would only have the tap water in it. The other two jars had the recommended quantity of product added to each jar and the jars were gently stirred to disperse the product in the jars. After 10 minutes, I added the following into each jar: 5 cheerios to simulate typical organic house gunk, a small chuck of bar soap, and glop of ball bearing grease to each jar. After an hour the Bio-Clear jab had essentially decomposed the Cheerios, while the Rapport product and the water had no visible effect on them. The jar with water was beginning to get cloudy, while the Rapport jars water remained clear and the bio-clear jar was a brownish color. After 24 hours, the Cheerios remained intact in both the water and Rapport product, while they were disolved into little particles on the bottom of the Bio-Clear jar. The soap in the bio-clear solution was considerably softer than the soap in both the Rapport and water, which felt much more solid. The Rapport water continued to remain clear, but seems to have no impact on breaking any substances down. At the 24 hour mark, I also added two pieces of dried dog food to each jar. Within 2 hours the Bio-Clear solution had decomposed the dog food, while only water saturation seems to have taken place in both the Rapport and water solutions. After 48 hours, a pretzel stick was added to each solution. After an hour, obvious signs of decomposition and gassing was observed in the Bio-Clear solution, while no visible activity was observed in the other two solutions. The Cheerios and dog food are still essentially intact in both the Rapport and water solutions, but have now sunk to the bottom of the containers. The soap remains very firm as well in each of these containers, while it appears to be further softening in the Bio_clear solution. None of the three products appears to be having any impact on the ball bearing grease at this time. I will be continuing the tests and update this report should any meaningful information come out of the longer term testing. I understand that these tests are fairly simple and don’t necessarily represent what is happening within actual plumbing pipes. But it does appear that the Bio-Clear product does effectively decompose certain organic materials and that the bacteria/enzymes have continued to work during the short test period. I have some hope that this product may, if used regularly as directed, actually help to maintain or clean drain pipes given time. I have no relationship with any products tested and personally purchased each product. The opinions expressed are mine and are based on my observations using my test results.

So I bought a house, my first. It is a lovely little place. I waived the inspection to make my bid competitive. When I moved in, I discovered, among other problems (basement windows leaking - I am so annoyed) all my plumbing was clogged. All of it. Three sinks, the bathtub, and the toilet. They all barely let water through. Grrrrrrrr. People can really be jerks. That is s something to disclose. Grrrrrrrrr. So I tried all sorts of things. Gross commercial decloggers like Draino, bleach (sorry planet - I was desperate), hydrogen peroxide - and then a couple of other enzyme cleaners, once I found out about it. I tried a few different products you can buy at a place like Home Depot. Nothing. And they were expensive! They only had one or two applications in a bottle. Then I saw this product and it seemed different... and I got it. It has been a couple of weeks, and - all is well! It took a minute, the tub and kitchen sinks were disgustingly clogged. I could tell it was working from the gurgling sounds, and then slowly they began to unclog. It wasn't that long, maybe four nights of it working while I slept. All drains had a moment where I could tell the biggest pile of gunk (likely in the P trap, which I did not want to deal with) just unclogged and went down the drain. Victory! And now they will keep being unclogged because all drains and pipes have a little colony of enzymes doing their thing. Perfect. I have used almost the whole container. Totally worth it. A pittance compared to calling in a plumber. I am going to get another container for monthly maintenance. I might still use it once a week for a while, I'm just paranoid... and the kitchen sinks still seem like they gurgle, a little, even though water passes through fine. The previous owners must have figured they would have to get an expensive professional plumbing flush and - yuck! - lived with gross water burping back up the drains. I could not live with that. Buy it my friends. It's science (hope that doesn't scare some people off - [cough] global warming is real [cough]) - and the stuff works! Stick with it a few days, if you have ridiculously clogged drains like I did.

Easy to use. Too early To tell if it will work as described

This stuff is amazing! So my laundry drain and the a/c condensation line are on the same pipe drain. Needless to say with the a/c drip and the detergents and scent beads, my line got very slow running and overflowed. A plumber came out and snaked it with no success and suggested getting the pipe hydro jetted for $2000. I said no thanks. So I bought Bio Clean and started putting this in my drain morning and night. At the end of the third day, my drain is now fully unclogged. Thank you Bio Clean! This is now in my routine to use monthly in my drain to keep it clear.

REVISION (raising to 5 stars). When I reviewed this product, I did not know that a company that installed fiber optic cable in my neighborhood bored into my sewer main line, which, over time caused mud to backflow into my pipes and eventually caused all drains in my home to backup completely. I had coincidentally just used Bio-Clean in several drains, so thought that the Bio-Clean was the cause, but it was not. Thankfully, the city put pressure on that company to fix the problem right away, which they did. After the main line was repaired, I continued to use this product without any issues. The fact that not all of the product dissolves turned out not to be a problem. The product definitely works well (see the last 2 paragraphs of my review) and is far LESS expensive than drain gel. Note that enzymatic cleaners work at the boundary of where water meets organic material. No enzymatic cleaner will quickly eat through an entire stick of butter -- they work on the surface area that is exposed. Original Review: A good portion of the product does not completely dissolve, no matter how thoroughly you mix or stir it, and it will make drains backup that had no clog. I followed the directions and treated a bathroom sink and shower drain over 2 days, flushing with gallons of hot water in the mornings. On day 3, water going down the bathroom sink caused water to backup into a kitchen sink. NONE of these drains were previously clogged or even slow. On day 3, when someone was showering (after the drain had been thoroughly flushed with gallons of hot water), water backed up into a garbage disposal. I turned the disposal on to create turbulence, and this caused water to backup into the shower, which is 25 feet away. Some of the product came back up the drain onto the shower floor; it looks like cornmeal bisque. I believe all of the product that did not dissolve will eventually clear, but treating these drains at the same time on the same days for 5 days in a row would likely create a much bigger problem. Just don't go crazy treating many drains over consecutive days, and the day after each treatment, make sure you flush with lots of water. All of that said -- I ran a pipe brush on a stiff handle down a bathroom sink (the stiff handle prevents it from going through the P-trap). I slowly remove the brush, and massive, thick, ink-black gunk splattered all over the sink. I had previously treated the pipe with drain gel but never brushed it. After this, I decided to treat the pipe with this product. The next day, after flushing it with lots of hot water (which I did after the gel treatments too), I ran the brush down the pipe, expecting that at least some of the gunk would still be there and come back up when I removed the brush. There was ZERO gunk. The brush came out of the pipe just as clean as it was when it went into the pipe. This was after just one treatment (however, again, I had previously treated it with a high quality enzymatic drain gel multiple times). So, the product does work. There should be some warning on the label about the fact that much of it does NOT dissolve and the possibility that it will create temporary backups / clogs.

Love this product! Our kitchen and laundry drain always gets clogged with grease and draino (bottle after bottle of expensive gel stuff) did nothing! Called plumber who put a camera down the drain and showed how the pipe was blocked with grease and had to blast it out. Plumber recommended this product and left me a 1/4 of a tub he had. Put it down the drain 5 nights in a row and then once a month for maintenance and pipe never backed up. Then I ran out and stopped. Within 2 months the pipe backed up again. This product is expensive but it's so worth it, cheaper than plumber, and 1 tub will last close to a year! I highly recommend this product, it's well worth the price

Fantastic---we have been dealing w/a wretched (non-sewage) odor like dead animal in wall in a small lavatory for the three years since we moved to this residence. After replacing the toilet, cleeaning every nook and cranny imaginable, hiring plumbers, roto-rooter, etc dumping numerous products down the sink, thhis FINALLY resolved the issue ! Every other liquid just masked the smell for a day or so. We were ready to tear up and replace drywall and flooring. This is a dry powder, follow directions. The odor is gone after two days, we are at day three and will follow directions for 5 full days of treatment. We are keeping another jar on hand.

I've used this product regularly for ~5 years since moving into a home with a septic tank. It's hard to say if it works because I don't really have a control septic tank without this product to test it against. However, our tank was ready to be pumped out after 3 years of use with two full-time residents. My hesitation in recommending or repurchasing this product is that the preparation and instructions are overly fussy and detailed compared with other similar products. The powder has to be mixed into water, shaken to dissolve, and then flushed at a time when little water will run through the plumbing for about 8 hours. Sometimes it's tough to find the right time to be able to use it. Plus, the powder smells....yucky, and when you shake up the mixture, it generates a little bit of pressure and when you open the lid, be ready for a little release. Contrast all that with the pods my septic tank cleaner sold me. The instructions were simply "drop the pod into a toilet, flush, and repeat monthly." That's it. I think I'm going with those in the future.

I bought this after having a slow drain that would occasional become completely blocked. Normally, I would try and snake the drain (up to 25m) but would not have full success, requiring a plumber to do a professional job. After trying other chemical type products (e.g. Draino), I decided to try Bio-Clean. It didn't clear everything immediately, but I tried it several nights over a week on a slow drain that would become blocked if the sink ran too long. After a few uses, the slow drain completely disappeared. We now have zero problems. I run it once every few months just in case. Lots of uses in the tub. Highly recommend Bio=Clean.

This stuff is amazing!! We always struggle with fruit flies. It’s a never ending all consuming battle. I have tried every trap imaginable and they always come back. A couple treatments of this stuff and they are completely gone. It’s a miracle! We also have a septic system so nice to get two benefits in one product. It might seem expensive but you get a lot of doses out of one jar. It will last me a year at least Highly recommend!

When our toilets got clogged, I told my wife you just have to leave it for a few days and the bacteria will eat through the sewage and naturally unclog it. She didn't believe me, but it works every time. That is the premise for this product - it contains 4 different type of bacteria to eat away at material clogging your pipes. We had a kitchen sink that would not drain quickly. We used the standard sodium hydroxide products and it worked for a short time along with using a plunger. Eventually, the drain started to get clogged again. Baking soda and vinegar did not work (by the way, one should try those separately since baking soda is a base and vinegar is an acid - using them together just neutralises the two). We tried two treatments with Green Gobbler and it worked a bit, but the drain was still stuck. Next, I used a double dose of Bio-clearn (two treatments of 1 scoop in 500 mL of warm water) and left it overnight for 12 hours which is longer than the 6-8 hours recommended. We did this for 5 straight days as suggested. This did not clear the drain, but it did improve the problem as the sink did drain slowly. Next, I used two treatments of Green Gobbler again. The drain still got stuck. I used a plunger and this time, the stuck material was finally pushed down the drain. The sink has been draining well for 4 days now. Ideally, if you are going on a vacation, you should treat all your drains with this product and when you return, you'll find that your drains are cleaner than ever. The manufacturer recommends using this product monthly for prevention. I recall our local plumbing store, Gregg's, recommended this product years ago for prevention. Natural solutions can work and Bio-clean is definitely one of them - you just need to give it enough time.
