How many children could play inside the pool at the same time?

I would say at least 4. It would depend if these were toddlers or 8 yr olds. I frquently had 4 in there ranging from age 2-5. If they are just sitting in there and not rpugh housing on the slide ypu cpuld prob fit 3 just in the small end and another handful in the big end. Its a good size.

Have you used it as a ball pit? If so, how many balls did you need?

Yes, we tried using balls and it would have taken over 1000. Instead we decided to buy a bunch of pool noodles and cut them, about 30 cut to 2 inches each worked great and much cheaper!!

Does this hold up in the hot climates like Phoenix if you leave it inflated out in your yard? Or will sun and heat kill it over time?

I live in Los Angeles San Fernando Valley which averages between 94 and 100. I bought the pool set it up in the yard mostly full sun and after 3 days it was springing air leaks all over. Very very thin plastic panels!
