Discourses, Fragments, Handbook : Epictetus, Gill, Christopher, Hard, Robin: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: Good quality - This book was a hard read for me but there were good points and ideology to take from it. Think I need to read it a few times to really understand it. Review: Good Translation of Epictetus' work - Good translation of Epictetus. I do prefer the Elizabeth Carter translation of his work but this is the best of the modern translations that I have read. Worth buying for the Handbook at the back (The Enchiridion) alone.

Good Translation of Epictetus' work
Good translation of Epictetus. I do prefer the Elizabeth Carter translation of his work but this is the best of the modern translations that I have read. Worth buying for the Handbook at the back (The Enchiridion) alone.

A true philosophical classic packaged beautifully
Superb book and a true classic. This Oxford text is both readable and complete so you're not missing one word. As a reference to the thoughts and contribution to philosophy of Epictetus, this is the best book I have encountered for Kindle. An indispensable guide to life in a nicely formatted book, I heartily recommend this to all who are interested in learning about navigating the travails of life and those who are interested in the Stoic perspective.

Four Stars
Not as good as "Letters from a Stoic" but still worth getting if you're interested in Stoicism.

On a personal level although written several thousand years ago ...
On a personal level although written several thousand years ago I have much inspiration in the writing of Epictetus, going through some very hard times in my personal and family life. Some turn to the Church, I have looked to Greek philosophy. On an academic level this is well written, well edited with helpful guides notes. The icing on the proverbial cake, would be in my opinion the original Greek on the facing pages. A recommendation to anyone with an interest in the Stoic philosophers

Good quality book
Good quality paperback. Have to say that the Oxford press books are exceptionally well produced with better quality paper which is more white with nice font. Better than the penguin books and I thought that they were good. Very satisfying

You don't like war, you don't like violence, you're exhausted from struggling against political power and obnoxious people. How do you convince yourself to take a step back, without abandoning your principles? This is a good book to help with that. BONUS: You don't need to read it cover-to-cover, but can flip open anywhere and start reading. The author wanted discipline but was also obviously a realist about how much time attention span we can spare for him.

Epicteto, el esclavo liberado, máximo estoico en práctica. Buena edición de Oxford que contiene la obra completa del filósofo, además de fragmentos recopilados de otros autores donde hacen mención de sus humildes enseñanzas.

How many ways can I sing praises for this translation of the Discourses? 1. It is a great size to tote around anywhere much better than the knock off public domain translations and even though it is bigger than the Everymans translation it is softcover and all in one book instead of two. 2. It uses modern English and there are great notes to back it up. Gill and Hard used the ideas of AA Long and really help you get so much more out of the Discourses. Plus all other writings are there too fragments and the Handbook too!!!!! There are no errors and typos like many of the other books and it is just plain fun to read. The 2 number one books are Oldfather's and this one by Hard in my opinion.

Quite poor print quality (text is not at all sharp and has shadowing). I suggest considering a different edition.

The book is perfect, a true treasure of Stoicism, a 'must-read' for anyone looking to apply Stoicism in their life and who wants to dive even deeper into this philosophy. The quality of the book, such as the cover and pages, is also very pleasant. Overall, I am very satisfied with the purchase.
