THE First Days of School: How to Be an Effective Teacher, 5th Edition (Book & DVD)

I am preparing to teach Middle School Math and take the teachers exam. I love this book! Very easy to understand and practical. It is as recommended to me by a teacher of 30 years and I highly recommend it!

After reading this whole book I feel more prepared to teach than I ever have in my 23 years as a teacher!

This is one of the most important books a teacher can read. I recommend reading it before you start your career, but I read it several years after I began teaching and I learned a lot of information that improved my classroom management and ability to really reach the students. Highly recommended!

I ordered a copy of this book for each one of my teachers, and it truly is the best resource out there. Having been in education for over 20 years, I can confidently say this is the best gift you could ever give a first-year teacher. The First Days of School provides practical, straightforward strategies that set educators up for success from day one. The combination of the book and DVD makes it easy to implement the techniques and create an effective classroom environment. Highly recommend for any educator, new or experienced!

Beginner teachers as well as veteran teachers can learn something from this book. I found the advice on class seating/arrangements most helpful and interesting. There are some points that give too simplified of an explanation without nuance. For example, the short talk on not giving zeroes oversimplified research on this practice, and now administrators use the advice from this book to have a soft policy on student achievement with low expectations. Despite these problems, the book provides a good overview to be considered a recommended book.

This book is amazing! The quality is excellent, and the cover and paper make it a durable, high-quality resource for teachers at a low cost.

I was a new teacher and reading this book ahead of time and deciding on which classroom management priorities I wanted to insist on absolutely saved my derriere. A year in now, it still does. Besides the guidelines being time-tested, the book is also chock full of quick summaries of great research. Recommended for every teacher, regardless of the age of their students.

The book arrived, but I cannot seem to play the DVD. I would have liked to do this. I wonder if it is a zone issue. So sad.

A fantastic guidebook for any first-year teacher. Pick and choose what you want to gain out of this book. It is absolutely great at laying out foundations such as classroom management. Highly recommended.
