Still the GOAT of JRPGs - Now in a Super Convenient Package
Squaresoft in the 90s had a hit ratio that I don’t believe any other developer has ever been able to repeat. Final Fantasy 7 exploded on the PlayStation in 1997 and changed video games in two huge ways: graphics and story. Arguably one of the first, if not the first, mainstream video game that can be called “cinematic”, Square used the power of the PlayStation to show off what console gaming can be and solidified Japanese-style role-playing games as the gold standard of the RPG genre. Square also made waves by breaking with Nintendo, their traditional publishing partner for Final Fantasy 1-6, after infighting over disc gaming vs cartridge gaming (Nintendo wanted to stick with the less powerful cartridge and Square disagreed, opting to partner with Sony for their console’s increased power vs the Nintendo 64). In an ironic twist, this version is cartridge based and on the Nintendo Switch, so we’ve maybe come full circle on the matter after the initial split 27 years ago when this game was released. Anyway, this game is still a masterpiece and should be considered a mandatory play for those wanting to school themselves on the history of video gaming. It continues to earn its position as one of the most important games of all time. The version is the European Switch remaster paired with Final Fantasy VIII. It looks great, runs amazing on the Switch, and I need to go back to my original version but I believe the translation has been slightly updated for the better. The weakest part of Squaresoft’s games in the 90s was their English translations. The translators Square used were awful on top of working with completely unrealistic timelines to translate the games, making a perfect storm of mediocrity for those of us who don’t speak or read Japanese. This game is no different, leading to one character in particular being portrayed as a horribly racist caricature. I’m happy that seems to be slightly better in this translation. I know I’m clouded by nostalgia, but the game is fun, the music still hits in ways that underscore Nobuo Uematsu’s place as one of the best composers in the world, and I love these characters and this world more than a lot of real people I know, so it’s as near to perfect as a piece of media can get.

BUY IT ALREADY. Massive childhood nostalgia.
Amazing game combo. Just a heads up, the guide for 8 has a bunch of errors and outright lies, use Google instead. Still get one for your collection if you're a nut like me, but don't use it for the game guide. The 7 guide on the other hand is my Bible for that gameplay. Worth every penny as a reference for when you get lost in this world, and you WILL get lost lol

Physical forever
Nintendo didn't understand the Switch or why it was successful as evidenced by the Switch 2.. He we have two absolute stallion RPG classics in physical form and once purchased are yours forever and at a steal. No digital license nonsense, just pure ownership. Pull the switch out of the closet in 15 years and you can fire it right up and get your adventure on. Fun Fact: non first party Switch games are cheap, so stock up on all your favorites, take chances on anything that looks interesting, and you'll have a giant library of games to last until you're old and gray and playing the days away in retirement. There's a massive library of titles you can pick up for anywhere from 15-30 bucks that are better than any AAA slop for 80. So if you have a switch, start building a mega library with wonderful hits from the past like this or the latest indie sleepers like Deadcells. You'll never regret it, especially with how the big gaming corpos are trying to strip all the ownership and fun from the hobby.

great switch game
Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII Remastered If your a fan of the final fantasy series then this is a really good twin pack game. Its says remastered in a sense however plays exactly as the original from the old PlayStation era. Looks great on the OLED switch, with the only difference being you can speed up the traveling aspect and turn of some of the battle animations otherwise its the same. Hours of grinding and enjoying the story on a single cartridge its a game that you can replay over and over again. recommended if your an RPG or final fantasy fan.
