First Dictionary for Inquisitive Child
Hopefully, there comes a time when a 5 or 6 year old is reading both independently and for pleasure. Our little granddaughter has taken to reading in bed before "lights out" or early in the morning if she wakes before the household is up and about. There comes a time where you realise they are reading "big words" and trying to understand what the word means from the sentence context, but that doesn't always work. (Roald Dahl introduces quite a few new additions to a child's vocabulary!) I realised our little one wasn't always grasping the meaning of a word and simply skipping onwards, so I needed a good first dictionary for her to look up anything she was stuck on. This dictionary is ideal and sometimes she just picks it up to have a rummage through the content at random, sometimes with relevant illustrations. Very pleased with this purchase..

Not many words
A bit dissapointed in this. The first 3 words my daughter was curious about was not there! Dung, twine and perilous. As far as I could understand 'perilous', I cannot get not having "twine" and "dung"...

Good for infants and lower junior ages.
Nice features - alphabet down the edge of each page shows them clearly where they are. The first and last word of that page is shown at the top (it stops them going through every single entry on every single page for their word until they get into the habit of checking that themselves). Simply worded definitions and a very good selection of words for their age group (I’d say 6-9), at 7yo we have only had to go to a ‘big’ dictionary once for schoolwork.

Has most of the words that my daughter wants to find. Beware however that this is an Oxford Dictionary and contains British English. As an example - my daughter wanted to spell the word "garbage." This is a Canadian/ American term and therefore was not present in this book (neither is "trash"), but "rubbish" was there. As it is British English some of the words are also going to vary compared to Canadian words such as realise (realize - although this book does have the variation on a few words).
