Overall a great hammer. Not as great as the company that starts with E. But is prolly the 2nd best option in my opinion. The steel on the upper handle is a great addition. Only gripe I have is it seems to not hit like other 22’s I’ve owned and the handle is wider due to the rubber grip. Which seems to cause more fatigue. But, since the other hammer I’ve always used is no longer available I’ll buy this one whenever it’s times up. Overall, if you frame and are smart enough to not buy a hammer that’s 1/4 to a 1/2 weeks pay you should buy it.

Heavy duty hammer. Not too heavy and easy to swing.

I've had the hammer for over a week now, I work in the concrete trade, so the hammer got put to the test instantly. So far I like it alot. I like a big heavy hammer, some guys like lighter hammers. This one is heavy and the head is way bigger than any other hammer, which I also like. The waffles are great for nails although they do wear down quickly so I'm not sure how long that's going to last, once they are gone the hammer kinda loses its integrity. The rubber piece on the handle has already began to loosen and slide back and forth in its little cutout slot. And I believe the last time I used it, which was on Friday, the head also had began to loosen slightly. I could feel it shifting as I was swinging the hammer. But other than that I love this hammer and I'm a big fan of the OX brand. I am kinda skeptical about the longevity of this hammer as it has shown signs of deterioration and lack of durability after only a week.

***UPDATE (two weeks later): I just used this hammer to nail some roof sheathing into place prior to using my air nailer. I probably drove 200 8d nails, some just out of my reach (thank you magnetic nail holder and long handle) and the hammer performed very well. I also nailed some facia into place and the rubber on the handle was useful as a bump tool to move the wood gently for alignment without damaging the cedar. I’m raising my rating from 3.5 to 4.0 Stars.*** This hammer does a good job of hitting all the points to make it look like a “cool” hammer on the job. As to its success on delivering on the intended use, it really depends on the user. Take a look at the photos I’ve attached so you can make a comparison to what you usually use. What is “Overstrike protection”? - It’s for those who miss the nail or otherwise hit the handle against something with a misplaced swing. This will mainly benefit “newbies” and those whose aim may lose focus as they tire from trying to use brute force for driving nails. HINT: Using a hammer properly is actually the science of muscle memory + familiar tool+ combined lever energy; not a Herculean swing. Golf uses the same science in developing a swing. Whether the shiny overstrike protection handle wrap will also improve head to handle attachment in the long run is beyond the scope of my testing. Hammers with magnetic nail holders are now somewhat commonplace in the market and I believe they have their place. Due to the ease of carrying a hammer in your tool belt, the magnetic nail holder feature may be a helpful for such things as tacking roof sheathing into place before nailing off with pneumatics. However, you still need a free hand to place the nail onto the magnet… Those who do a lot of sheathing probably have a trick that I don’t know. Some will like the handle; I like the modest axe handle end however I find the overall length to be just a little too long compared to my old framing handle that I have used for years. The hammer face is larger, which is a pro/con kind of a thing depending on the situation. Note that the sharp new waffle face of all hammers is great for driving nails without deflecting, but is also acts like a meat tenderizer if you hit yourself with it. This type of hammer will help you learn very quickly not to miss while you’re starting a nail. The ounce callout on any hammer is the weight of the head only and there can be a lot of other weight coming from other parts of the total assembled hammer. Take a look at the difference between this new 22 ounce that weighs-in at 39.35 ounces and my old 20 ounce hammer at 27.25 ounces. I’ve never needed stainless steel however some may prefer it. SUMMARY: Within the scope of my testing, this hammer works as expected. Having a good framing hammer is absolutely essential on a jobsite and although it is a little heavu and long for me personally, I am glad to have another one to select when heading out to work on a project. My rating on this hammer starts with a 3.0 Star Average and I am adding 0.5 Stars due to what I perceive as premium materials used to make the hammer. This is the second hickory handle framing hammer I’ve purchased from ox through Amazon. I started with the plain wood handle without the steel neck guard, or the rubber grip and was very please with the quality and performance, so I decided to upgrade to this one. My first one is still in good shape with average wear n tear. The neck is slightly splintered from overswinging on sidewalk pins but the steel neck on this model does a good job protecting from splintering. Would highly recommend these hammers for anyone doing any sort of framing or residential concrete work. Would probably work well with panel forming as well but I’m not sure how well it would hold up long term smashing panel clamps. But overall 10/10 for my current uses. Great quality for the price
