Why has the price increased?

Have know idea, I am guessing like with everything since Brexit - everything is more expensive now.

Can I use this on an open wound? I saw the hospital use something on it that looked similar and they described it pretty much the same as Vaseline

Yes you can, it not only protects the wound but helps with the healing, like a second skin. Very effective and they do use it in hospitals. You only need a smidgen though, as it goes a long way. If you are covering the wound with an adhesive dressing, just make sure the dressing is big enough and does not come in contact with the gel, as the dressing will not stick to your skin otherwise. We use it all the time and definitely recommend.

What is yellow paraffin used for

Exactly the same as Vaseline - only it's in a useful tube which is much more hygienic to use than dipping into an open pot.

How long does this keep, or what is the typical expiry date on these tubes?

I keep the tubes up to six months or more ! they still keep my Chemo Lips moist. I have not checked expiry date as I expect up to a year from purchase as they are sealed tubes. Best Wishes . Polly .
