this must be washed off?

No. It’s meant to be left on, like a toner. It is very slightly sticky when used at full strength- I dilute it 50% with purified water because it’s very concentrated & a little strong for my sensitive skin. When diluted it’s not sticky. I just mix half & half in a small cup, dip a cotton pad & swipe it on.

Does it have to be washed off daily? I have dreads, and can’t wash my hair for weeks at a time.

If you leave it in, your hair around the scalp area may look greasy but it won't feel greasy. It will feel coated. I leave it on for about 2 hours before washing my hair and I wash my hair with a dandruff shampoo. The dandruff shampoo. by itself, doesn't work half as well as using it in tandem with Dermazen.

Can I use this serum on my scalp during the day or will it make my hair oily?

It doesn’t make it oily feeling. It is more like hair gel looking when it dries. It would feel or look about if you had salt water in your hair after a day at the beach. If I need to wear it, I use it overnight and wash in the am. Or I brush it to slick it back into a ponytail. But no, oily isn’t the word. And remember it only goes on the scalp, you don’t need it to go all the way down your hair.
