Doorbell camera without a subscription but packed with features
This doorbell camera has a lot of features. It is nice to have an option to use battery or hard wire it. The camera picture quality is clear and has a large field of view. The two way communication also works well. We chose the hardwired option and it was easy to install. I like the notification feature so I can monitor deliveries and speak directly with people at our door. I also like not having to pay subscription fees for the doorbell camera. It is a great value for the price and I would recommend it.

Excellent Purchase
I purchased this to replace another brand that we had less than a year and motion detection went up. I’m really impressed with this camera. Motion detection is immediate. You have the option of subscribing for a monthly fee but you can also use it without a subscription. It picks up much more in the area because of the wide angle lens. The cost was just a little higher than my previous camera but you get much more for the money. The picture is clear, even at night. Installation was tricky because of locating the Version so here’s a tip: camera versions in the US don’t start with V or VER on the serial number, as it states in the manual and online. They start with US and if it’s says something like US 1.6 it means you’re using Version 1, and so on. Other than that snag, installation was pretty easy to figure out. It also only took about 5 minutes for my family to download the app and share the camera. This camera doesn’t miss a thing in my apartment hallway so I am able to monitor and download events that need to be sent to the police and management. The speaker is very clear and you can immediately watch the playback, no waiting. The app is really easy to use to set up your camera. Very happy with this purchase.

Extremely pleased!
I can’t say enough good things about this Tapo video doorbell! First, you don’t need a subscription to get full use of the important features! They only feature missing without a subscription that I might miss is the clip preview feature. It will still alert you to the type of motion detected, but you will need to open the app to see the details. Other than that, all the other features work without a subscription! Just install a mini SD card to keep the recordings! A 256 GB SD card will record a huge amount of video! That’s the largest card it can take, but plenty sufficient. Crystal clear video with the 2k setting. And still doesn’t take up the storage that quickly. I hardwired the doorbell so I could take advantage of the “always on” feature. I’m taking advantage of the 30 day free trial from Tapo, so I get alert previews now. Only records when motion is detected to the cloud. Once the trial is over, I will still have SD card storage to view. You have to go to the Storage and Recording section of the Settings. Then go to Recording Schedule and manually select the times you want the camera to record continuously. The more Scheduled Recording you select, the faster the SD card will fill up. The motion labels will still work without a subscription. These include motion only, vehicle, person, pet and package. I quit using my other camera because of the increasing subscription fees. This Tapo video doorbell even has a wider view than my other doorbell camera. I can see everything from one side of the porch to the other! It even records motion before it gets close to the camera! The doorbell has a spot light that can be turned on and off. We use our porch light, so I don’t use the spot light. The color night vision is fabulous! I love the multiple detection settings! My other doorbell camera only had one detection zone. With this Tapo video doorbell you can set a separate detection zone for each type of motion! When using the live view you can zoom in with the camera. You can also use zoom on anything recorded to the SD card, but when viewing cloud recordings with the subscription, zoom is not available. The audio on this doorbell camera is great too! Very clear and you can even personalize your quick response audio with a recording of your voice! Of course you can download video recordings or take a photo and save it to your phone for later reference too. It has a ring phone option to alert you if the doorbell button is pressed, which is great when you’re not home or can’t come to the door. You are able to communicate with the person via your smartphone. Comes with its own plug in doorbell ringer that has several different sound functions. If you have any Kasa products, the Tapo app is compatible with them also. Just link Kasa to Tapo, it’s easy! Installation was easy! Only needed the mounting plate and the simple jumper wire to bypass our original doorbell transformer. The directions are clear and precise. The kit comes with wire extenders, hardware and wedges to angle the doorbell camera if desired. This Tapo video doorbell is just fantastic! I can’t imagine another video doorbell that can offer anything more without a subscription! And the price is fantastic too! Kudos to TP-Link for giving the customer a great product and experience!

Excellent Ring Alternative
I couldn't be happier with the Tapo D225 2K Doorbell Camera. After researching several different doorbell cameras, I decided to give this one a try, and it has exceeded my expectations in every way.The setup process was incredibly simple. The instructions were clear, easy to follow, and well organized, making installation and configuration quick even for someone who isn't particularly tech-savvy. Within minutes, I had the camera mounted, connected to Wi-Fi, and fully operational through the app.The video quality is outstanding. The 2K resolution provides a sharp, detailed image that makes it easy to identify visitors, packages, and activity around the front door both during the day and at night. Motion notifications arrive quickly, and the app is intuitive and responsive.Another pleasant surprise was the battery charging time. The initial charge was much faster than I expected, and the battery life has been excellent. It's nice not having to constantly worry about recharging the unit. One of my favorite features is the flexibility of the storage options. Unlike many competitors that force you into a subscription, the Tapo D225 gives you the choice of storing recordings locally on an SD card or using cloud storage. Having both options available allows you to choose what works best for your budget and security preferences.Between the crystal-clear video quality, easy setup, fast charging, reliable performance, and flexible storage options, the Tapo D225 has been an outstanding purchase. If you're looking for a feature-rich video doorbell that delivers premium performance without unnecessary complications, I highly recommend it.

From Competent Smart Doorbell to Defective Passive Camera: Firmware-Induced Obsolescence
The Tapo Smart Video Doorbell (2K QHD) originally met its technical specifications, providing adequate image quality and local smart home integration capabilities. However, a recent mandatory firmware update has severely degraded the device, stripping away its core alert functionalities and reducing it to an unreliable passive camera. Furthermore, TP-Link’s post-purchase support imposes predatory logistical barriers on international Amazon buyers, rendering the written warranty effectively null and void.Technical Analysis: Critical Software RegressionThe device operated optimally until the latest automated firmware distribution, which introduced severe code regressions that cannot be resolved via factory resets or clean reinstalls:Local API Breakdown (Home Assistant): Critical binary entities required for automation—specifically doorbell press, motion detection, and person detection—have completely vanished from the integration's entity registry. The firmware update effectively blocked local polling endpoints, eliminating advanced smart home interoperability.Hardware Chime Synchronization Failure: The RF/Wi-Fi link between the outdoor doorbell button and the indoor physical chime fails intermittently. Pressing the physical button regularly results in zero audible alerts inside the house.Push Notification Inhibition: Real-time push alerts and VoIP routing to registered mobile devices are either heavily delayed or completely dropped, rendering the device useless for immediate access monitoring.Technical Verdict: The product has ceased to function as a reliable access control or security system. It now operates solely as a passive IP camera, failing at its core advertised purpose.Support and Warranty Analysis: The Logistical BarrierReporting this software-induced defect to TP-Link revealed an anti-consumer support structure designed to exhaust the user through financial friction:Support Redirection Loop: The customer is forced into a loop between regional support (Colombia) and originating support (US), evading technical diagnostic accountability.Cost-Negative RMA Framework: To address a 100% software-based bug, support demands a physical hardware return (RMA). International Amazon customers must pay for cross-border freight to a US warehouse, establish a US freight forwarder, and finance the re-shipping and import fees back to their country.Financial Invability: The total logistical cost to execute this warranty exceeds the net retail value of the product itself. It is financially more rational to throw the device in the trash than to pay the manufacturer to replace it with identical hardware that will update to the same broken firmware.Refund Denial: TP-Link explicitly refuses to issue direct financial refunds or Amazon credits, citing a lack of direct consumer transaction infrastructure, thereby shifting the manufacturer's liability back onto the retailer.ConclusionStrong Anti-Recommendation. If you require a doorbell that reliably integrates locally with Home Assistant, or if you are purchasing via Amazon US from an international location, avoid this product. TP-Link has demonstrated that it can unilaterally strip away core advertised hardware features via post-purchase software updates without providing a viable, cost-free remedy for global consumers.

Nice Alternative, Works well with Alexa and remote alarms/conversations with iphone
Nice, non-subscription option to you-know-who. I popped in a microSD card and I am able to record days on end to include traffic passing the house front. Works well with Alexa, easy to adjust sensitivity and range, and proper alarms sent to alexa appliances and phones. White colored objects do tend to be too bright in the sunlight, and I have noticed it does not pick up as many moving cars as another camera I have mounted high up on the house - could be location deltas or settings need further adjustment. But spot-on for people approaching the house and leaving packages. Can set type of alerts as well (movement, pets, packages, etc). I’ve also noticed that it captures the entire event (unlike the subscription-based you-know who devices). Good enough though image clarity on light colored objects and perhaps not sensitive enough in some cases and I had to drop a star. But overall very happy with the design, install effort, and integration with our smart home.

Excellent Video Doorbell with an unmatched battery life!
I've replaced my Ring Doorbell with TP-Link D225 to eliminate paying for Ring subscription services. I should have known that it is a superior product just because of the TP-Link brand although I didn't realize how superior until it was completely installed. It's a much more sold construction and heavier, super easy to set up, connected to the internet very quickly & strongly. Everything required for installation is included with the doorbell giving you the option of using a slight downward wedge, wedge to the side or just a flat, no wedge mount. I chose the slight downward to allow for easier viewing of packages and found that it still provides plenty of upward space to include complete tall people and higher. The battery is stated to hold charge for approx. 8 months! We'll see, it does have a larger battery than any other doorbell I researched (including TP-Link's battery only model). The D225 also provides the option of wiring the unit without the continuous need for the battery. An SD card slot will also receive a 512GB SD card (sold separately) so I always have access to the video. Once connected with Alexa, notifications come through loud and clear when motion is detected at the doorbell. Notifications are also available via messages. The only downside I find is that, when the battery needs recharging, the entire doorbell needs to be brought into the house for charging. The battery inside the doorbell can not be removed. Although, the doorbell is easily released from the mount which makes it easier. All and all, I'm very pleased with the quality of the unit & the quality of the videos that it provides. They are easily downloaded onto your phone & sent to others. The mounting instructions stated to try and keep the unite from direct sun. That was impossible for me, as the early morning sun shines right onto my front door (later NO sun) although once mounted with the downward wedge, I found that there is NO problem with the sun shining right into the lens. TP-Links quality name has shown to be accurate for the D225 as it is with many of their other products. I highly recommend this doorbell. It's a bit of an initial investment but pays off over time due to NOT needing a subscription to view your videos from anywhere.
