Miha’s amazing analytical abilities and in-depth experience create a book that is absolutely packed with knowledge. This manual is a must-read! - Justin Flores, Olympic Judo Coach, D1 Wrestler & Star MMA Coach It takes most people roughly a decade to get to the coveted jiu jitsu black belt. Far too many quit along the way for various reasons. The purpose of this book is to ensure confusion or lack of understanding are not one of those reasons. Double black belt Miha Perhavec lays out the key positions and techniques of modern submission grappling in a highly organized fashion. This manual also features hundreds of curated pictures to help grapplers have more fun and success in training and perhaps even competition. The chapters of Modern Submission Grappling follow the same progression as a jiu-jitsu match, starting on the feet and ending with submissions. The selected techniques, accompanied by plenty of reference pictures, are carefully curated to include only the essentials. You will learn: Key takedowns Guards and how to pass them Transitions between positions Dominant positions and how to escape them Fundamental submissions (including leg locks) And much more! Review: Book and video combination covers breadth and depth - I love reading and Perhavec's writing style and humor are clear, to-the-point, and entertaining. Something I'm always worried about is that buying a book on jiu-jitsu is silly, because you need to practice on people to get better. While there's some truth to this, I do think having a roadmap of jiu-jitsu and a theoretical understanding can make the practice part more focused, efficient, and organized. This book makes this transition from theory to practice really easy because of the way it is structured and written. For example, I've often encountered descriptions of takedowns that go into painstaking detail and the million situations in which you may use the takedown in question and ended up overwhelmed. In this book, the author will immediately let you know the ideal grips and requirements, mention some alternative grips, then get straight to the point. This made it easier for me to create a road map of what to do depending on the grips opponents will let me get. What I like most about this book is that it goes over many things relatively fast, allowing you to get a good overview, but when you require more details you can go deep by watching the videos. Review: High quality paper, binding, photos and writing! - If you're hesitant on purchasing this book, go and listen to Jocko's podcast with the author, Miha. Within the first half-hour, any concerns you had on the quality of this book would disappear. Miha is a well spoken, educated and intelligent person who's expertise is evident throughout the book. His ability to break down complex techniques into easy-to-follow steps is impressive. What truly sets this manual apart, though, is his engaging writing style. Not only is the content top-notch, but Miha also infuses the guide with quick-witted humor. To attest to his sense of dry and short humor, he recently addressed any potential CJI judging complaints by stating, “If you have complaints about my judging, I would love to hear them. To send one, buy my best-selling book, tear out the first page, write down your complaints and send it to me. If you have multiple complaints, I'd love to hear them. Buy another copy of the book and repeat the cycle until you hear back from me...” This cheeky comment is a great example of the type of wit Miha provides and makes the learning experience all the more enjoyable. I am one of those butt scooters who had some concerns about the -80kg finals match and took this obviously sarcastic comment to heart. Due to so much frustration, this will be my fourth time buying the book! The high quality of the paper and print makes it very easy to take notes, tear out, fold, and mail it to Legion! So far I have yet to get a response, but I hear Miha is already so busy with inquiries on seminars, how to be an expert judge, and even working on another book. Maybe I'll just have to attend his next seminar to air my complaints.

Good book. It has a smooth flow and a great vibe, combining solid techniques, helpful photos, and a touch of humor. The print isn’t dense and the book is lightweight, making it easy to carry around and flip through whenever you have a few spare minutes, much better than scrolling your phone. The video link was a pleasant surprise, and luckily they don’t overload you with newsletters (just kidding). Good man, good book. Highly recommended.

Must have for hobbyist and competitive athletes
I’ve been training gi and no gi for close to 2 years and this manual has not only polished my fundamentals game, but also has elevated my understanding of the mechanics of Jiu Jitsu. Its covers everything from standup, to heel hooks, to guard retention. The No Gi manual is a must have if you are serious about stepping up your game, specially if you are one of the elite 100 chosen to battle the one gorilla. A big plus is Miha’s writing; his combination of succinct, easy to understand explanations with witty commentary make the reading surprisingly fun for a martial arts manual. 10/10.

Wish I had this when I started No-Gi
This manual is a must have for anyone trying to systemize their game. For years I've been scribbling down techniques in an attempt to create a system for my game in order to target the areas I want to improve especially after having moved from Gi to No-Gi and finding myself having to relearn the fundamentals of wrestling and Open Guard. I've essentially thrown all those notes out as this manual has done all that work for me with a whole lot better structure and detail. It's straight to the point with the most effective moves and techniques in today's modern Jiu Jitsu game. I was really surprised at how well the pictures demonstrate the moves as well with a series of snapshots that are almost as good as watching a video with added benefit of easy accessibility. If I was going to buy one book on No-Gi Jiu Jitsu, this would be the one.

A practical guide
The framework in this book is excellent—clear, organized, and easy to follow. Miha does a great job illustrating different techniques in a way that makes them accessible, even for someone new to the sport. As a novice jiu jitsu practitioner, I found this to be a valuable tool in helping me understand not just the movements, but the why behind them. Highly recommend for anyone starting out or looking to strengthen their fundamentals in no-gi.

Great Illustrations + Video + Knowledgeable Teacher = AWESOME Book!
This is a great book that covers all the important elements of your no-gi game, from offense to defense, and how to counter each type when you find yourself in it. For something as physical as jiujitsu, good pictures with progressions are a MUST if you're going to understand what to do, and this book delivers on that very well! Pictures are plentiful, with about 3 or so provided for each move to help you see the progressions, and to top it off, they're also accompanied by free online videos that let you see the moves in action. When you combine the two, what you end up is a really polished product that helps you learn faster than any other book I've come across. I have also had the honor of being able to train under Miha at his jiujitsu facility, and he's not only a kind, knowledgeable, and gracious guy, but his skills are amazing, and I've never been so destroyed when rolling with someone! Do yourself a favor and get this book - it'll elevate your game!

Unexpectedly the book helps structure training
Miha Perhavec's 'Modern Submission Grappling' is an invaluable resource for no-gi jiu-jitsu, offering a clear, humorous, and comprehensive guide from basics to advanced techniques. My son and I have found the book's structure, paired with the online manual's excellent videos, perfect for practicing and understanding the flow of techniques in real-time. With its detailed illustrations and practical approach, this manual is essential for anyone aiming to enhance their grappling skills

Very good reference book
Perfect when you want to lookup some technique or just want to browse among the techniques. It has nice colored pictures. For me it would feel a bit boring to read the book cover to cover. Sometimes its a bit hard to follow along what happens just by looking at the pictures, but if I’m not mistaken there are video tutorials available. The book was well worth the money!
