When Nancy Friday began her research for My Mother/My Self in the early 1970โs no work existed that explored the unique interaction between mother and daughter. Today psychotherapists throughout the world acknowledge that if women are to be able to love without possessing, to find work that fulfills them, and to discover their full sexuality, they must first acknowledge their identity as separate from their motherโs. Nancy Fridayโs book played a major role in that acceptance. The greatest gift a good mother can give remains unquestioning love planted deep in the first year of life, so deep and anassailable that the tiny child grown to womanhood is never held back by the fear of losing that love, no matter what her own choice in love, sexuality, or work may be. Through candid self-disclosure and hundreds of interviews, Friday investigates a generational legacy and reveals the conflicting feelings of anger, hate, and love the daughterโs hold for their mothersโand why they so often โbecomeโ that mother themselves. Review: Good read - This is a great book in helping you to understand your mother wounds and heal from them Review: Amazing - I absolutely loved this book. So much knowledge and eye opening information about mother / daughter relationships and even a little about fathers. I think all women should read it.

Helps daughters understand their rocky relationships with their mothers
I really liked this book. It's definitely on the older side, a classical, though the information is still highly relevant. I bought this book as a suggestion from my memoir coach as I am writing a memoir about my strained relationship with my own mother. This book opened my eyes to some of the deeper issues at stake in Mother-Daughter relationships. I don't like how long the chapters were (if you even want to call them that because they are humongous!). It caused for a slow read and took me a while to get through. However, the information inside this book is valuable and worthwhile to read, especially if you and your own mother don't get along or if you believe they may have a personality disorder.

Best of all
I had read her first edition many years ago and recall that it was insightful. With the recent passing of my mother I was hoping for help in understanding my intense, lingering and diverse feelings outside of the anticipated grief. Some of her paragraphs in this edition could have been transcribed from my own verbalization. Best of all, I am feeling a heightened sense of peace with my increased understanding and awareness that my feelings are anything but unique among daughters!

Bitter
This book has too bitter a spirit for me and seems more directed to women who have a sour relationship with their mother; or are not happy being a mother themselves and trying to deal with that. I cannot see how it is helpful or how it even fits into a mother/daughter help category; it seems to be Nancy Friday's personal tale of how her mother failed her and she is trying to explain why everybody else Must Also be Screwed Up and Unhappy. How is this book constructive and helpful? Not for me. Try something else, really.

Itโs a good read
I first read this many years ago hoping to get some insight. I was curious as I grew up without sisters. Itโs an eye opener, and probably not always easy to read, especially for some women. The author is a lay person and itโs groundbreaking, especially for the time. Ordered for a friend. Author has written more follow up books. Recommended.
