Victorinox Bantam Alox Swiss Army, 5 Function Pocket Knife, Silver

I had wanted to add an Alox SAK to my collection and finally broke down and purchased the Bantam since it was the most affordable. I read and listened to a lot of reviews before buying it, and it is clear that many saw the benefits of this knife. It is incredibly thin and light (1 oz.) and makes a perfect EDC especially in an urban setting. The combo tool increases its EDC usefulness, but I will pair it with a Gerber Dime, a multi-tool equally small and light that adds a few things the Bantam omits like scissors and pliers. The two should provide all that I normally need. It is an attractive knife with the silver Alox scales and has appropriately been described as a 'gentleman's knife.' The blade comes in under 3 inches and is non-locking (as are most SAKs), so not only is it legal carry in Great Britain, but also in restrictive places like Illinois. A quality product worthy of anyone's collection.

I know there are a lot of folks who argue the Bantam is the best of the Victorinox SAKs, but that seems to be a superlative that is better determined by each individual based on the mission being addressed. What I think is irrefutable is the fact that the Alox Bantam is a delightful knife in just about any pocket. It's so slim; its engineering and assembly speak elegant utility in a way that calls the Bauhaus to mind. I've used one in C-Suite meetings and deep in the desert, and it was perfectly in place in both - as well as every place it's been needed in between. I bought this new one last night on a lark (delivered today - yay, Amazon!) for no reason other than I liked it so well and wanted another color (my first one is blue) - oh, and it was cheap! Everyone knows how great these are at slicing (owing to the superslim blades). The Bantam's five-in-one blade/tool turns out to be really solidly useful, too: I find myself using it all the time. And the Alox scales on a Bantam (while they mean no toothpick/tweezers or key ring) are durable (the plastic ones scratch so easily; no biggie but they don't carry the same pride of ownership) and are so aesthetically pleasing that it's difficult to describe: slim, grippy elegance; they'll have anyone fidgeting with the little pocket jewelry. Everyone knows the downsides of Victorinox knives: the steel isn't the most hardcore (which means it's easy to resharpen) and they're not the most durable. Okay, don't abuse them and keep them sharp, and they'll give you years of happy service - and show you to be a classy individual!

Great pocket knife very easy tu use and very lite, look great can make a perfect gift. Size is excelent, you won’t even notice you are carrying it.

It’s an Alox SAK…just buy it! I have used it for box cutting, wire stripping, and as a screwdriver just this past week! So versatile and AMAZINGLY thin! Takes up NO pocket space but still a sturdy main blade that is truly versatile!

Well built, super sharp, and super slim. Fits perfect in my wallet, so I can take it everywhere and I don’t even notice it. I love this knife and the price is unbeatable.

UPDATING EARLIER REVIEW: I previously gave this great little knife only 4 stars because it lacks a locking blade, even though it's too small for one. I now realize I was unfair because of all it does in other ways. Recently, I had to replace the air filter in my car. I had the wrong flat head screwdriver to remove the breather cover and didn't want to walk up to my apartment to get the right one. Idea!! Dug in my pocket, opened the non-blade side with the 4 additional tools, and did the required job in a jiffy with the flat head tool. So now ...IF you value a knife with a locking blade, fine. But I now have greater appreciation for what this knife does, instead of what it doesn't. ORIGINAL REVIEW HERE: Love the knife, sits quietly in my pocket until needed, and it's amazing how often it's needed: Opening packages, breaking down boxes for the recylcing bin, opening those dang packages with atom-bomb proof plastic containers, ditto plastic bottles and packages that say "tear here" but of course they're laughing while you try that. In short, a good little tool. HOWEVER, the knife blade is NOT locking. That is, the blade opens and that's it. When you want to close it, you close it, or ... it closes for you, perhaps on your finger when you're not paying attention. That has happened to me when I somehow pushed it the wrong way. Not good. With locking blades, the open blade is fixed in place, and a lever or button releases it when you want to close it. This is just a niggle of criticism, and I realzie that for its size the lack of the locking lever is understandable. It would increase the size of this little gem. Still, it's something to consider for those who value a locking blade.

As usual, the Bantam Alox, is another excellent version of the Swiss Army Knife. However, I recently had occasion to use the can-opener tool, and as the Alox has aluminium scales, rather than Celador (plastic scales), the thin aluminium scales dug into my fingers, as I advanced the tool around the can. For one as aged as I, though I hate to say that that hurt...but it did. I would much rather have used a P-38, had one been available. As a result, I have placed the Bantam Alox into a "tin" survival kit (somewhat larger than an Altoid's tin), where it shall remain unless required. I'll not pocket-carry an Alox, again. I'll stick with a Huntsman, or a Wave+.

This is my first SAK with the alox scales and it makes it so slim! It is also my first one that is only one layer; this makes it startlingly light and sleek. This tool fits my definition of “gentleman’s folder” you can absolutely carry this in any pants in any situation and it will not print. No one will know you have it until you save the day with it! The two tools are very useful and suitable for most situations. It’s not meant for heavy use, but I suspect it would hold up to most of what most people do on a daily basis.
