Garrett ACE 300 Metal Detector for Adults - Made in The USA - Waterproof Coil and Headphone Plus Accessories

I absolutely love this detector and would give it 10 stars if possible. I've been a dirt fisher for about 5 years now so I thought I would upgrade from my Bounty Hunter Time Ranger(a decent detector in it's own right) to a Garrett. I was saving up for an AT Pro but then this gem became available and boy howdy am I glad. I was literally waiting on my front porch for the UPS dude to deliver it, I'm in my mid 40's and I felt like I was 10 years old again waiting for Christmas morning. I had been watching the 3 very informative and in depth manufacturer videos on Youtube over and over so when I received the 400 I had it assembled and was at an old local park that has been there since the 20's swinging away 30 mins after opening the box. I had been to this particular park several times before but not with the Ace 400 and I was blown away with it's capabilities. I was hitting coins at 8-9 inches through trash and junk that myself and many others had missed and I'm not talking crappy ass modern clad either. I recovered everything from Indian Heads to Walking Liberties and had no idea that these older coins were even there this whole time. I'm now systematically going to all the places I had previously visited and my results thus far have been more than pleasing. The 400 is very easy to learn how to use and beyond accurate, the headphones that come with it are very nice, small and comfortable, not big and bulky like the rapper headphones in a studio pair, plus the volume control is a nice touch. My one and only complaint is that the "included" coil cover was not included in my order, but I procured one for $15 because a coil cover is a must in my opinion. So, in conclusion, the Ace 400 is a superb mid-level machine, accurate, easy to use and if an object is there it will find it up to roughly 10" depending on size and conditions. Oh, watch the Youtube manufacturer videos before you use it, they are a great learning resource. 5-9-16- Update, I bought a second Ace 400 as a gift from a different seller on Amazon. I was a bit ticked off because this order did not have the "included" coil cover in it either!!!! Neither box had obvious tampering and I am unsure why I was the lucky one and didn't receive a coil cover in either order. If it were not for the quality and performance of the Ace 400, I would never buy anything from Garrett again, If you advertise something, ya best deliver or it just makes you look like a big fat LIAR!! 6-7-16-Update, I contacted Garrett and they sent me the missing coil covers, the missing cover issue has been settled. I still love the Ace 400 & would still give it 5 stars as it has already paid for itself two fold and I'm well on my way to an AT Pro.

Well made, easy to assemble, sensor is good, communicates precisely, water proof, great customer support. We have only come upon ordinary metals, but it finds them accurately. Awesome upgrade.

The Ergonomics The ergonomics of the design are very good as long as you are 5’ 6” or taller. At a height of 5’ 6”, I adjust the stem as short as it will go. The control panel is very well arranged. The buttons are very easily pressed with the thumb of the hand holding the unit. The handle is at an angle that requires you to bend your wrist too much if you grip it with your fist, but you can grip it with your fingers extended somewhat, allowing your wrist to be nearly straight and comfortable. Because my forefinger was falling above the foam grip, I maneuvered the foam high enough that it compressed into the control unit. I could not figure out the purpose of the arm strap – I removed it. Coil Angle Adjustment The arrangement for adjusting the coil to shank angle does not provide enough friction to prevent the weight of the coil from tilting the front of the coil down as evidenced by others who have broken the plastic bolt that adjusts the friction. To solve the problem, I made a washer with three holes for the pegs like the rubber one, from a 0.016”” thick clear plastic yogurt container cover, and placed it behind one of the rubber washers. This solved the problem, but it is best to place one of the washers behind each of the two rubber washers. The added washer must be thin enough to allow the rubber washer to recess significantly into the cavity, and the stem with washers must slide easily into the coil ears. The Battery Cover. The battery cover of the control unit bumps into the shank cam lock as you attempt to slide it off. You can solve this problem by filing off about 1/16” off the pointy end of the battery cover. The AA Battery Advantage A significant advantage of the Garrett metal detector design is that it uses four AA batteries instead of the two 9-volt batteries that many competitors use. The four AA batteries have an energy capacity that is about 64% greater than that of two 9-volt batteries. Furthermore, two 9-volt batteries typically cost 2.5 times the cost of the four AA cells. Loudness It is extremely loud, especially in the pinpointing mode. The headphones solve the loudness problem, but it is awkward dealing with the cable mess if you need to lay down the detector from time to time. The Cable I added a mic stand cable clip to the stem to help in dressing the cable. I wanted the cable dressed close to the stem, but not so tight as to stress the strain relief at the coil. Use I located a “tungsten” ring with a target ID of 75. Tungsten has a relative conductivity of 30, and I expected a number smaller than 75 for the target ID. The ring was between two very close iron indications and a little difficult to capture. Iron masking might have been useful had I known the target ID would be 75.

This detector is simple and works great went out for the first time ever today me and my 3 year old had a blast he calls it gold hunting and is addicted already out of all the bottle caps we found we also found a throwing knife crazy! I recommend this for a hobby and family fun!

It is very lite.. still learning how to use it.. in all I really like it!!
