Buy Wonderland: A Year of Britain's Wildlife, Day by Day by Westwood, Brett, Moss, Stephen (ISBN: 9781473609266) from desertcart's Book Store. Free UK delivery on eligible orders. Review: Informative but Lacking Illustrations - I finally finished this book, and I thoroughly enjoyed every page. It was exactly what I was looking for, an in-depth look at British wildlife. However, I do wish there were more illustrations included. Thereโs literally nothing, which is a bit frustrating because I had to go out of my way to look up what the animals actually look like, which would take me out the flow. A few pictures in the book would have made it much more convenient. That said, the content was excellent, and I still really enjoyed it. Iโm definitely planning to read more from the same authors! Review: Nature writing about nature - Written by two accomplished field naturalists in a clear engaging way. It's refreshing to learn about wildlife from nature writing these days instead of some of the navel gazing that seems to prevail. The calendar format is not new (see also Notes from Walnut Tree Farm by Roger Deakin and Field Notes From A Hidden City by Esther Woolfson to name two good examples) but works well providing snapshots of the natural world. I disagree with other reviews citing the lack of illustrations. In my experience this doesn't detract from the book. After all it's easy enough to look up species online or in a field guide.

This beautiful book is a lovely compendium of notes and observations ...
I only received this book yesterday but I felt compelled to write a review almost straight away! This beautiful book is a lovely compendium of notes and observations (each one usually about a page long) about Britain's wildlife from the usual suspects like barn owl and badger to name but two and others you may not have even heard of like the snow flea and sword-leaved helleborine. A great book to dip in and out of and it includes some lovely illustrations for each month. This would make a great gift for any wildlife lover (or indeed anyone to be fair!) and this will definitely be one I will turn to again and again in the years to come. I highly recommend this book!

Really inspiring!
A small section on an aspect of nature for each day of the year. Just enough to whet the appetite to find out more yourself about anything that catches your interest. I have been inspired by several short sections and have been finding out more about shield bugs, moths, house martins and the history of playing conkers. I have had to stop myself reading on further each day and have got out from the local library Stephen Moss' "Wild Hares and Hummingbirds" as well as using iPlayer to catch up on past editions of Bret Westwood's "Natural Histories".

The narrative is entertaining but overall I was disappointed because I expected to see an illustration/drawing for each day. A bit like a picture and text diary. Now if I don"t know what anything looks like, such as the Aesculapian snake, I have to find an image somewhere. I wouldn't have objected to twice the price if there had been pictures, but I am enjoying the text. Great for young naturalists. Margaret

Captivating book
Full of surprises and a unique take on UK wildlife - I like to think I know a fair bit about our wildlife, but this book teaches me something new every night when I pick it up!
