Should be standard equipment for all guitar players!
I love this product!! I just love it! Any guitar players out there who are reading these reviews, wondering whether or not they should invest in this tool, go ahead and click the "purchase" button! I bought this one because I wanted to strengthen my fingers to better my guitar play. I bought the blue one (5 lbs) and this was a good one for me to start with. I am pretty strong so I was going back and forth regaring which one I should get, but I'm glad I aimed low and went for the blue because even though my grip is strong, when it comes to my individual fingers, that was an entirely different issue. I've been practicing with the hand exerciser for about a week now, and my guitar has never sounded so good! I can play for a very long time with my chords being nice and solid the entire way through, I'm so happy I went ahead and bought this hand exerciser. On their website, they have various hand exercises you can do, depending on what purpose you got the exerciser for. There is a section specifically for guitarists (and even within this section, it is divided into various types of guitars, such as bass, acoustic etc...). My pinky finger is slowly getting stronger, it's the slowest one in catching up, and no doubt I will purchase the next level up once my pinky is as strong as the rest :) (I also bought that ruff rider attachment for this hand exerciser, which purpose is to help build or maintain calluses, and this too was money well spent! My calluses has built up very quickly, and what's even better is that I can take this with me on vacation, or if I go through a period with little guitar play, I can work out with the hand exerciser in order to keep my fingers nice & callused. I highly recommend for guitarists to spend the extra $$ for this attachment.) Anyway... I have nothing bad to say about this tool. I totally love it. All guitarists ought to have one of these, or perhaps multiple.... for various locations (such as 1 in the car and 1 in the guitar bag or something like that).

Good Quality, little light
I originally bought the Blue (5 lb), Red (7 lb) and the Black (9 lb) Gripmasters for my 14 year old boys. The Blue is a little too easy for gripping but excellent for exercising the ring and little finger. The Blue was too easy for them so they did not use it so I ended inherited it. It is pretty habit forming and fun to use because the tension is light, this makes it good for use anytime, anywhere. (I have used it stuck in traffic and it is also a good stress reliever) If I had to do it again, I would have probably not bought this tension unless you have a very light grip, probably have started with the Red. Just remember that this is mainly for fingers and hand exercise so very easy to use for gripping, the challenge is working out the fingers. It is not like using the regular heavy hand grippers. It has increased my hand strength and grip just by having it with me and using it during the course of the day without planned workouts. Great product, excellent for finger or hand exercise, good quality.

Strong Grips now
This is a great finger strengthening device. I use it when I was learning to play guitar. Its a little tough in the beginning but works out well.

Just awesome!
I used to try to strengthen my fingers using the Gripp balls, and later, the Gravity Gripp, which were grip balls that were also 1 pound weights. However, they were bulky, hard to get a grip on, and heavy and pretty silly looking. So, when I saw the picture of these awesome little gizmos in a catalog, I ordered one right away. They are about the same price of the Grip balls, but they are SO much cooler! Not only is this good for fitness training, they're even better for musicians! (my instrument is piano.) These are light and flat and they fit right into a purse. I don't feel silly using this out in public -- if anyone asks, I just let them try it, and they are immediately hooked. I carried my blue one around everywhere until this weekend, when I gave it away to a friend. It is difficult to know which tension to use. I'm a woman with small hands, and found that I am right between the blue and the red. I use the blue one for 4th and 5th finger (left hand). I can usually handle the red one for everything else, but the booklet says that repititions are more effective than heavier tension. I use mainly the blue one now. I hope to work up to the red, but that will be a while. I'm also going to buy a couple more so I can work both hands simultaneously. I do have one caveat -- make sure you use these correctly. Don't overdo it, or try to use a heavier tension to just to feel all macho. Like any weight training, you have to press the buttons precisely to isolate the muscles. Don't use your whole arm just to get the button pressed. I found that if I started to cheat, I got a little wrist pain and felt the beginnings of tendonitis. (another reason I'm staying on the blue tension for now.) Oh, and buy your Gripmaster here at Amazon. They are $15 each everywhere else.

Strength and Dexterity in a Pocket-Sized Tool
Strength and Dexterity in a Pocket-Sized Tool The Gripmaster hand exerciser has been a solid addition to my daily routine. I picked up the 5 lb (light tension) model, which feels just right for working on finger strength without straining. What I really like is how it isolates each finger—pressing down on the individual pistons makes you realize quickly which fingers are weaker, and it’s satisfying to feel them gradually getting stronger with use. The spring-loaded design is smooth, and the build quality feels sturdy despite being lightweight and portable. It’s versatile too—I’ve used it for warming up before playing guitar, for grip conditioning before workouts, and even just as a desk-side fidget that doubles as hand therapy. After a week, I already notice improved control and endurance in my weaker fingers. I can see why athletes, musicians, and even people recovering from hand issues use these. If there’s anything to keep in mind, it’s that tension levels vary quite a bit. The 5 lb version is great for light strengthening, but serious grip trainers or those aiming for heavy forearm work will probably want to move up to 7 or 9 lbs. Also, longer sessions can cause some hand fatigue, so pacing yourself is key. Bottom line: A well-made, effective tool for anyone looking to build finger strength, dexterity, or endurance—whether for music, sports, or general hand health.

Good but mussing caps from the previous one.
I reordered a 2nd unit (2025), but sadly it did not come with the removable black caps (pictured), like the one I got in 2010, which are very good for bulding up those finger tips for guitar. Other than that they are good.

Fantastic!
Have been using for about a week now. It's a great way loosening up fingers if you write/draw or type a lot, and can be used as an alternative to a stress ball, pocket sized and very solid construction. Bought the light tension and will probably be a repeat customer for one of the heavier tension ones as well!

Rick Climbing - Glad I bought the light tension!
If you’re reading this review there is a strong chance you’ve come looking for some Kind of insight and guidance on what tension / strength to buy. I know I trawled many reviews on Amazon, many YouTube videos and other pages. What I realise is every person is different and expectation and needs differ to. What I bought : Blue / light tension / 5 pounds pressure Purpose : to help increase / improve grip strength for Bouldering / Rock Climbing About me : so I’m a 41 year old man, 6ft 14 stone with average fitness and what I would say is average strength in my hands. I’ve been bouldering for 6 weeks and ride a bike daily to and from work. So up to recently, have been doing nothing particularly centred around my hand or grip strength - unless you consider the grip used on my bikes handle bars. I use a computer all day and console game regularly. When making the decision I was stuck between the choice of blue light tension and red medium tension. After much research I opted for blue on the basis that whilst it might be easier for me, repetition was going to be the key and I could work my way up - this was preferential to going in too heavy and struggling to compress the grip master, straining my hands to early on and becoming frustrated. I was glad I opted for the blue - it’s relatively easy to compress all the way in a single press, but does require some effort on continuous reps. When used in repetition you can feel the resistance and feel your hands building up, I’ve only used it for a short time but can tell that it will have benefits for climbing and building up grip strength - especially when using finger tips to grip. The individual finger grips are good also highlighting the difference in strength between them and being able to work them individually. Being a desk worker I have it at my desk and pick up during the day, it’s a fun distraction / desk toy also. Side note - if you are interested in building pure strength i.e prefer lower reps & heavier weights, you might be a little disappointed in the resistance on this model and might benefit from the the next model up - a weight lifting colleague found it disappointing. But as a starting point for high reps and for someone who doesn’t do weightlifting this was good for me!
