Are the tools metal os plastic?

Tools are all made from solid wood and real metal

Are these too small for an 8 year old?

I would think an 8 year old could use these as much as a younger child....they could even be used by an adult. I have 2 sons age 8 and 7 and they use the set and enjoy it. It isn't a small child cheap set in my opinion. It is of good quality for the money and an item that can be used in a garden, sandbox, or just for digging in the dirt as boys do!

Do the tools last well? I'm concerned that handles will fall off soon?

We have only had them since Easter and have not used them but I can tell you I'm extremely particular and these seem like small adult tools: sturdy, wooden handles and metal painted ends. Very well put together. The bag is not that great. It's a bit small for the weight of the tools, a bit flimsy in my opinion for an older child (above 4 I'd say).

Could a 2 year old use these safely?

We bought this for our 3 year old nephew and he loved them. It says 5 year old + but as long as your around when he or she plays with them, then I would say yes, they should be able to use them safely. I hope this helps.
