Teenagers with special abilities investigating cold cases
When the FBI starts a classified program & goes around recruiting teenagers with special skills to solve cold cases, Cassie is selected for her ability to read people like paper. But the group she is going to stay with is as peculiar as herself. With the killer on roll again these random kids need to put all their skills to work together & survive before they end up becoming a case themselves. The plot is heavily invested in the abilities of the teenagers, which adds a complex layer to the story. Each characters is developed in a different angle of light, making it tad bit difficult to pick favourites. There was definitely scope to add in multiple PoVs, though what we have is also good. There is just one thing that wasn't to my liking & that was the love triangle. I am not very interested in that aspect though Cassie's analyzing skills were simply top-notch. Loved reading about the way she breaks down things into morsels of information. N now, I need to read the book 2!

Star rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice rating 🌶️ Completing my journey through Jennifer Lynn Barnes' novel, "The Naturals," has left me both intrigued and slightly critical. As a first-time reader of the author’s work, I must admit that her writing style is wonderfully accessible, allowing me to devour the pages with ease. Within the realm of young adult murder mysteries, "The Naturals" certainly ticks off all the expected boxes. The narrative maintains an impressive pace, effectively weaving suspense and mystery throughout. Despite having cracked the identity of "the killer" fairly early in the plot, I still found myself enjoying the story. The inclusion of a love triangle, though intriguing, left me slightly torn. The characters Michael and Dean both have their merits, making it a genuine challenge to predict Cassie's ultimate choice. The incorporation of romance, while subtle, adds a nice extra layer to the story. And I'm actually glad it wasn't center staged, it would've taken the whole plot down. Each participant in the Naturals program displays a unique personality, a feature I found intriguing. Regrettably, my connection with the characters fell somewhat short of the anticipated depth. Despite this, I did find myself drawn to them for the majority, except for Lia. Her portrayal struck me as out of tune, her demeanor appearing annoying and lacking in maturity. The Naturals" has piqued my curiosity enough to consider embarking on the subsequent installments. While the narrative maintains a brisk and engaging quality, I hope for a touch more character development and romance as the series progresses. This novel, while promising, hints at potential for growth that I believe could truly elevate the series to a higher tier of storytelling.

Okay… I never thought I’d be this obsessed with a YA thriller/mystery/crime book—but here we are. The Naturals absolutely grabbed me and refused to let go. I inhaled this book in under 48 hours, and honestly? Zero regrets. BookTok made me do it, and BookTok was right. The pacing is FAST. Every chapter had me guessing, spiraling, and whispering “oh no… oh NO” at my Kindle like a truly unhinged reader. The suspense never lets up, and just when you think you know what’s going on—boom. You don’t. Cassie is such a compelling FMC. She’s basically a human lie detector, able to read people with terrifying accuracy—which is exactly why the FBI recruits her for a secret program filled with teens who have extraordinary abilities. Michael can read emotions, Dean shares Cassie’s profiling gift, and suddenly you’re surrounded by brilliance, danger, and secrets lurking in every shadow. And yes… there is a love triangle. But it’s done right. No messy drama—just tension, chemistry, and those “WHO WILL SHE CHOOSE?!” moments that had me swooning and clutching my chest. The banter between Cassie, Michael, and Dean is sharp, funny, and layered with rivalry and care. You feel the friendship just as much as the attraction. The stakes escalate quickly when a new serial killer appears—and Cassie realizes she’s not just solving the mystery… she’s connected to it. Cue panic. Cue stress. Cue obsessive page-turning. I was genuinely on edge, heart racing, completely locked in. Bottom line: The Naturals is clever, thrilling, fast-paced, and impossible to put down. It’s one of those books that makes you immediately want to binge the entire series. If you love crime-solving teens, high-stakes suspense, and just a touch of swoon—you need this book in your life. 💖 Favorite line: “You came after me.” 🥺 My response: I’ll always come after you. Yes, I cried a little. 🖤 Tropes & Vibes: 🔍 Crime-solving teens 🧠 FBI training program 🩸 Serial killer mystery 💘 Love triangle (done right) ⚡ Fast-paced, bingeable chapters 🖤 Dark, twisty YA suspense 😭 Emotional moments that sneak up on you If you’re even thinking about picking this up—do it. Just be warned: you won’t want to stop. 📚🖤

this book, unlike many I’ve read…ever, was un-put-down able. I’ve never finished a book this quick nor been hooked since the first chapter. I tried guessing the ending but the author managed to completely flip the main characters way of thinking and ergo revealing the plot twist. Highly highly recommend! So excited to read the next one!
