Bought it for my son. He likes retro games. Perfect pocket size. He plays it in between college classes.

Rarely used and nothing but issues every time, takes and act of God to get it to turn on after a month or so of light use. Toggling the power+reset and removing/inserting the SD card is like entering a cheat code just to use it. One year later and I've thrown this out because it just never works and I always end up using another hand held. Have Gameboys that are from the 90's and still work reliably to this day.

The device itself is good for the price point. Don't expect quick boot up or a smooth UI. I recommend this for someone just wanting test out retro gaming. One serious flaw is the micro SD card it came with. Very cheap and low quality. The system would not boot up. Had to download the firmware myself and create a new boot disk. Use a reliable card like Sandisk. I've only tried a limited number of games but many would not load even after I tranferred the ROMS to my own micro sd. Volume is decent and gameplay for Pokemon Emerald runs good as expected. Can play mp4 video well. But default player does not support subtitles. Also does not remeber last position in the video.

I have had the chance to try several of the rg35xxh handhelds and this one comes with I believe the newest version of the operating system. The other units I tried had a December 2023 firmware on them and this has a January 2024 firmware on it. This update corrected some minor issues that I immediately noticed. There is now a better menu when you exit a game that gives you your save options and several other options pertaining to the game you are playing. The prior version of firmware just exited the game back to the game selection menu in the console you had selected. The new version is much more user friendly. Also some games that did not work properly now do work properly one of which is Gran Turismo on the ps1. On the old firmware you would just get a black screen after you selected the track you wanted and that was it. Now the game works 100%. This is a nice handheld and that firmware update shows me anbernic is going to keep improving the system if needs arise. This has a nice bright vibrant screen with good viewing angles. The d-pad works well. A B X Y buttons all work fine. The shoulder buttons work properly with no rattling. It has good stereo sound thanks to having two speakers which are located on the bottom lip which is nice because alot of handhelds like to put them on the back which makes the sound muffled especially if your fingers lay over the speakers. This comes with a great selection of games with alot of well known titles but no "mario" games which I know some people always ask about. Lots of Zelda, Castlevania, Final Fantasy and Pokémon games though. All of the different consoles represented on here work well. There are even a couple extra consoles listed under the retroarch folder that aren't listed under the game room folder. Under the retroarch folder you will find it has open bor, ports, Pico 8, Atomiswave (play "Dolphin Blue" you will love it) and Naomi systems on it. The build quality of this is nice. Good solid plastic that has just a little texture for a solid grip. Anyone with a rg35xx will really appreciate the new horizontal version not to mention the performance upgrades. All in all an excellent value for a no fuss turn on and play game system.

This is a very good handheld unit, especially considering the price. It is a horizontal version of the earlier RG35XX and RG35XX-Plus units. Now the plus came out only a few months ago so some people who settled for that might have waited had they known this was coming… All I can say is that neither handheld is exactly expensive and this “H” version is noticably different to use. Hardware is very high quality and the controls all work very well. The screen is bright and the sound is impressive. I especially like the dual analog sticks, opening up games that are hard to play on the earlier versions. There is a beefy battery and the unit supports WiFi and Bluetooth. It runs a custom bare-bones OS from Anbernic that many people criticize for the lack of customizability and plain appearance. All I will say is that it works well for now and there are a number of replacement OSs waiting in the wings. Flashing a new OS is very simple using a PC or Mac as the whole thing is stored on the primary SD/TF card. I have tried out Batocera Lite and while I like the appearance it still has a ways to go to match the performance of the stock OS. My first exposure to handheld gaming was the PSP which I purchased on my wedding morning, don’t ever tell my wife…. So, I am less interested in Gameboys and the early game units that this can emulate. As far as I know this is the first affordable handheld to successfully emulate the PSP and let me play a lot of the games I remember, like Ridge Racer a day-one release on the PSP. The emulation isn’t perfect but with a little fiddling with settings (search YouTube for helpful videos) I was able to get it totally playable. The screen ratio is not wide enough for true PSP experience but it is acceptable. Dreamcast is another hard to emulate platform that works well for many titles. If this is to be your first foray into handheld emulation I would say that you need to be prepared for some fiddling to get best performance in any specific game but that the resources are available to help you. Youtube has any number of professional reviews of this handheld and they cover the technical details and can help you decide if this is the one for you. Personally I have wanted one for a long time but the ones that could emulate PSP were expensive. Speaking of titles, there are a lot (~500) on the SD card, I won’t list them or comment on the legal situation but even if it shipped with none there are so many sites on the net that offer out-of-print games today. I was also interested to try some N64 games (zero of which are included, but which are freely available) and was impressed with the ones I tried involving a certain mustachioed Italian gentleman. Great fun and very playable. You may need to learn to adjust settings in RetroArch but if I could do it you can too, look for help on YouTube and the nets. A Google search for “ RG35XX H Starter Guide” will bring you to a great jumping off point. So, I recommend this unit. I am having great fun with mine, in the transparent white case. If you order one don’t forget to order at least one SD card. I recommend a brand name like SanDisk and at least 64GB in size. The unit has two SD slots so you can have the OS on one and your games on the other. It comes with a single no-name 64GB card and people have had reliability problems so the first thing I did was clone the SD card it came with to a new one. There is already an update to the core OS from Ambernic that improves the look and feel as well. It is 48GB to download so be prepared for a wait :-) Packaging was a nice cardboard box with a simple plastic insert for protection. The unit comes with a screen protector, simple users guide and USB-C charge cord.

First time charging the device. It will not charge. When you plug it in it'll charge for a minute and then stop. This thing is a complete brick now

Pros: Many games, color, ability to add/remove more games and use the hardware in other ways. Small enough to throw in your pocket and have to kill time while waiting. Cons: The overall size of the unit is too compact for my hands to get comfortable and use the top triggers. The screen is small and the font used is very small making it hard to read for my old eyes. There was some hitching on a few of the games I played, and the upright arcade games seemed to have issues with the controls. For the price, I think this might not be the best value. If the unit was about 30% larger overall and had slightly better specs, it would be outstanding. But as it is, I would be much more comfortable with this at 49.00 vs 89.00.

This device is the perfect size for carrying in your pocket for quick gaming goodness. It is very comfortable to hold. As someone with large hands I honestly think the H is far superior comfort wise compared to the standard RG35xx and plus. I also REALLY like the little joysticks which makes playing fps games a hundred times more enjoyable than trying to fumble through with just a directional pad. I would say calling this “white” is a tiny bit misleading since it’s really more clear than white. I guess it has a little white tint to it and some of the internals (which you can clearly see) are white too, but still I’d call it clear. That said, I actually really like the clear shell anyway. It’s got a search option and the ability to save your progress which are both awesome features. There’s really not a lot of customization options with the default operating system, but I’m really here for the games anyway. And man are there a lot of games on here! This is a great handheld and has a lot of potential for many many hours of fun.
