Legendary Rodgers and Hammerstein musical starring Rossano Brazzi and Mitzi Gaynor. The story follows the journey of American Navy nurse Nellie Forbush (Gaynor) stationed on a South Pacific Island who falls in love with middle-aged French planter Emile de Becque (Brazzi). The cast includes John Kerr, Ray Walston, Juanita Hall and Tom Laughlin. Review: Good film - My son kept on saying if you never have a dream it won't come true, so had to get him the musical the song came from, guess that ages me but happy with my purchase Review: "There Is Nothing Like....................." - Well, you could quite sincerely add -- ".... a Rodgers and Hammerstein film", but in their film "South Pacific" the title of one of their songs, as you may remember, is "There Is Nothing Like A Dame". And it is just one of the memorable songs from this enjoyable film. Made in 1958, there is plenty of romance but although the action takes place on a South Sea Island during World War II we see little of the war. The film received the Academy Award for Best Sound and was a nominee for the score and was also nominated in the Colour Cinematography class. Heading the cast are Mitzi Gaynor, Rossano Brazzi, John Kerr and Ray Walston. Mitzi playing a young Navy nurse and Rossano, playing an older French plantation owner provide the main love interest. Other notable songs in this musical are "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair", "Some Enchanted Evening" and "I'm In Love With A Wonderful Guy". Turn the lights down, make yourself comfortable, switch on the film for 'there is nothing like' a good musical to help you relax and forget your problems for two and a half hours.

Not SO bad......
I never got into musicals until my wife made me (AND i mean MADE me) watch 'The King and I' and I was a little hooked on R & H. My missus went to London to see this as a film release donkeys years ago and asked me to get a DVD of it. Well..., I've watched it and.... sugarknobs..... this is a great musical movie. Yes we all remember the Morecambe and Wise mickey take but watching this movie shows that if it hadn't been so good their cameo of it would have failed miserably.A great film, brilliant songs and yes, Mitzi Gaynor was a bit of a looker for the time. Well rated and watchable escapism. 10/10.

Lovely Romantic Indulgence
I don't know what young people will make of this film but I adored it. I saw it first as a child on holiday with my mum so happy memories, lovely colours and songs. When they made it the colour filters used were a new thing and the director felt after that they had been overdone. Oh yes they have thankfully, making a glorious romantic fantasy of what is after all a flimsy story. The song 'Carefully Taught' is quite a modern take against racism, and caused a lot of trouble for Rodgers and Hammerstein at the time. It does though make the film much more pleasing to modern sensibilities, (Well certainly makes me more comfortable with the story).

There is nothing like South Pacific
Timeless classic! beautiful melodies!,One of the best from Rogers and Hammerstein The score is just beautiful, The whole cast are talented and the casting was just right. the setting is glorious. I have visited the Islands and it took me back to a very beautiful and special place. Never dates and the problems they face are just as real today as it was back then.sadly.A firm favourite of mine. If you like great music with an real storyline this film delivers it all.
