Essential "Just in Case" tool for data recovery
We’ve all got those old hard drives from high school or college just collecting dust because we don’t have the right cables to plug them in. I picked up this POSUGEAR Adapter to finally clear out some space, and it’s honestly one of those utility tools every desk should have. What makes this one better than the basic SATA cables is that it’s universal. It has the older IDE connections (both the tiny laptop ones and the big desktop ones) plus the modern SATA connection. I was able to pull photos off a drive that was nearly 15 years old without any issues. Because it comes with its own power brick, it can actually spin up those heavy 3.5-inch desktop drives that usually won't work with just a USB cable. The USB 3.0 speeds are solid—we moved a few hundred gigs of old backups, and it didn't take nearly as long as I expected. It’s definitely not a permanent external drive solution since the drive just sits bare on your desk, but for a quick "plug, grab the files, and unplug" mission, it’s perfect. It feels sturdy, the cables are a decent length, and it saved me from having to pay a repair shop to do the exact same thing.

This was a lifesaver for me. The Windows 10 operating system on my older PC crashed. It had a 1 terabyte internal hard drive and another internal 2 TB hard drive. I won't go into all the things I tried to repair the main drive, but trust me, the operating system was FUBAR. So I figured I would try to see if I could somehow read the drives without the OS. So I bought this external hard drive reader and it turned out to be the perfect solution for me. It was easy to use; I plugged in each hard drive that I had removed from my PC and connected it to the USB3 port on my laptop computer. My laptop recognized the external drive, and fortunately for me most of my personal data was still there. From my laptop I was able to run a Window's disk repair (chkdsk command with /f and /r parameters) and was able to extract important data and save it to my laptop, which I then copied to other drives. I used to have an old clunky external hard drive reader that was pretty much useless. But this one is like the Swiss army knife of external drive adapters. It's pretty ingenious how the the various connectors can fit most any hard drive. Anyone who has experienced that sinking feeling when their PC suddenly displays the "blue screen of death" or other software failures will hopefully, like me, bring their blood pressure back down when they realize all is not lost. I realize that there are some computer problems caused by a hard drive's mechanical failure that are not easy to extract data from. But for the low price on this hard drive reader, it's well worth trying.

Does everything it says it can!
Sadly, few things are as described or as promised. But this one??? It's fantastic. Everything you need is in the box - device, USB 3.0 'beefy' cable, power supply, and small power jack for IDE drives. I ran this thing successfully on 5 drives - 2 of which were old IDE drives. 1 drive I connected was questionable and did not spin up. I don't recall if it was dead 2 years ago or if the device wouldn't work with it but I'm 98% sure it's the old drive's issue. READ THIS! When connecting old IDE drives, this works just fine. But you need to read the fine manual that comes with it. You MUST select MASTER / SINGLE DRIVE with your jumpers on your old IDE drive. Usually a drive shows the location of the jumper on the label with these old drives. It won't work with cable select which is where most of these IDE drives have their jumpers. Once you get this corrected, you'll be able to power up and see the drive post. If you deal with data recovery, either for yourself or others, this is a vital tool to own at a very affordable price. If only we had something this small, compact, and fast 30 years ago when I started in professional I.T.

Wouldn't Recommend
While the packaging looks nice and the product is easy to use. It did not work as intended. Within seconds, it failed and wouldn't work again. I honestly thought my hard drive was going to catch on fire. Inside the computer, the hard drive worked fine, but on this device, it didn't function properly at all.

it does the job
Not the best, but it does the job sometimes. Some drives are not loading up, but using a different adapter, they do

Very simple/Basicly plug and play
Absolutely no issues. Works as it should. I used it for every type drive it was advertised to work with. I had drives that had been stored for years, and was able to retrieve all the old data that was on them.

Worked like a champ - was able to recover years of old data.
I can't imagine how people were having issues with this thing - it's pretty straight forward. It only works with platter drives, so that means no SSDs. I was able to plug in my old HDDs going back as far as the 90s. The MOLEX connector made it easy to power up my really old drives, and every single one of them connected without issues, just as long as the jumper pins were all in the right positions. I think the people who have the most issues with this product don't understand what type of drives this supports, or don't understand that they need to move the jumper pins to the correct position for their computer to recognize the drive as a readable slave drive. Great product - worked perfectly fine for me. 5 stars.
