Best LOW COST Alternative Dye on the Market!
I purchased 4 of these from this Amazon seller "BYPLE", I recommend them! This seller has the cheapest rates in town for this product, believe me I know since I use it often. I have tried many other brands and I stick with this one. Jerome Russell Punky Colour is super vibrant and long lasting! I have tried Special Effects before and it is long lasting and bright however, Jerome Russell does the same thing for half the cost! Plus I enjoy custom mixing my own pinks using a tad of blue or purple (for a cooler toned pink, I strongly dislike warm toned pink.) Flamingo Pink by Punky Color needs toning with a pat of blue or purple. The result is a bright shocking Magenta! Love it, if mixed right it blows Special Effects Atomic Pink out of the water. PLUS, this product smells like grape kool-aid soda :D AND did you know that you may do custom colors with these?! Say you cannot find the perfect purple or the perfect blue, what not.. well, I often create hybrid colors by mixing anywhere from 2-3 different Punky Colour dyes then store them for future use under the cabinet. Example being: Say I want a cool-toned pink? I'd mix 90% Flamingo Pink and add in a half spoon of Violet! Beautiful and gorgeous :) Or I mix Atlantic blue with Spring Green and come out with a beautiful sea-green! LOVE :) *Word to the wise, never mix greens with pink, purple, orange, or red! And never mix blues with orange or red! Anyhow, if you buy this product you will get your moneys worth. It is super vibrant, in fact, is so vibrant that you can dilute it for applying if you have more porous hair (as a result of several bleachings which are necessary to attain platinum hair.) Speaking of bleaching.. you MUST pre-lighten your hair several shades (if you are naturally dark) for this dye to take hold and fill your hair cuticle. That is how you get a very vibrant color-true shade from this dye. I highly recommend and cannot say enough good things about this bleach: Schwarzkopf Igora Vario Blond Plus Blue Dust-Free Bleach (Available here on Amazon) It has never broken my hair off, burnt it, or burnt my scalp. And as my hair is naturally dark brown, this bleach has always provided the most rapid lifting, in several levels, that I have ever achieved at home. That being said on to some more information which I hope you will find useful. If you are interested in diluting this product as I do then here is my diluting recipe and tips and tricks that work for me! Tools: 1.) Get a value package of vinyl gloves. Never mind buying them by the set at the beauty supply per hair coloring, way too expensive in the long run. A lady ALWAYS needs gloves on hand. You'll thank yourself for it whenever the hair coloring fancy strikes!) 2.) DOLLAR STORE: Buy a box of plastic spoons & forks, great for mixing and disposable. 3.) DOLLAR STORE: Buy a 2-4 count set of "tupperware" type bowls with lids - these you can use to mix your color then store under the bathroom cabinet for future use. My diluting Recipe: 80% Conditioner (Cheap one such as White Rain!) I use the Coconut scent as it makes your hair smell divine! 20% Jerome Russell Punky Colour (1 good teaspoon will do it.) Mix well to blend it completely, scrape the bottom of the bowl and sides to ensure that it is all blended evenly. Apply! *** You can control the amount of hair dye ratio to suit your needs, such a lower amount for Pastel Hair, or a higher amount for brighter hair. I never put it on full strength because it wastes product as far as I am concerned and PLUS I do not want to be stuck with the same hair color for months. Want to keep it bright and vibrant? Here is how: DO NOT use harsh shampoos at ANY TIME or shampoo often. Get yourself some "Dry Shampoo" to control the oily roots only, it will freshen them and leave your hair smelling great after absorbing the oils. Use a shampoo which is SULFATE-FREE only. The vegan section of the grocery store should have a reasonably priced one or you can opt for purchasing a more pricey salon product. Don't like it? Here is how to remove: I have very porous hair so it "grabs" color easily and sometimes it does not want to let go! When I want it out the first steps that I take are using 'Head & Shoulders shampoo'. This stuff will really fade it quick within a few washes. You can't just massage it into your head and expect it to work though. You have to massage it well through your lengths by rubbing the lathered hair between your hands from top to bottom, one section at a time. Then you will see lots of dye rinse down the drain. Once I have it faded I then take a plastic mixing bowl and mix up either an entire packet or a full scoop (depending on which bleach you have on hand, a pre-measured packet or a canister) of hair bleach with a 30 or 40 VOL Creme Developer FIRST, blend and allow to sit for several minutes to activate, and then I add in several squirts of any shampoo - which for those who don't know - this is called a "Soap Cap" I apply this to my entire head (wet or dry) and massage quickly then let it sit for about 2 minutes or slightly longer. Usually before I even have a chance to finish getting all my hair covered with this mixture I can see the color just disappearing instantly! SO the same may be true for you and if it is WORK FAST to apply it. There is no need to keep bleach, even diluted bleach, on your hair for more time than it needs to be, specially if it is already damaged. Mine is damaged however these soap caps never hurt it :) Follow with a nice conditioner! Not something cheap. I love Hayashi 911 Emergency Pak Re-constructor. It cost's about 33 bucks for 33 ounces here on Amazon. I Squeeze the excess water out of my hair with my hands and then apply this conditioner, clip my hair up and cover my head with a plastic cap (you can use saran wrap also! or even a plastic grocery bag) and leave it on for at least an hour. It is truly a moisture quench for parched hair! AND THE SMELL IS DIVINE! ***About using soap caps for removing alternative colors: Soap Caps work best on faded Pink, Yellow, Orange, Purple dyes. They are pretty much instantly wiped out. Colors I have found which don't need to be faded first to be successfully stripped out quickly are: Pink Yellow Colors which I have found are super stubborn to remove with either Head & Shoulders or Soap Caps are: BLUE Colors which I have found to need substantial fading to be removed easily: Purple Green I love blue and purple but they are tenacious, especially blue. At least for my hair. I hope this review might help out some newbies! Please remember that ALL hair is different and dyes and removal processes are highly subjective to each individual! The above tactics just happen to work great for my hair so I thought I'd share.

My favorite semi permanent fantasy hair color!
I’ve been using punky color for the past 3 years and it is by far my favorite brand! Started dying my hair fantasy colors after becoming disabled, (since I no longer had a dress code to follow for work) and soon my friends and family had me doing theirs, too! It’s comparable to lime crime’s unicorn hair or overtone (which I’ve also used) but WAY cheaper, which allows me to change or maintain colors even on a very tight budget. I’ve used violet, purple, plum, fire, flame, vermillion red, flamingo, turquoise, bright yellow, and spring green. The reds tend to stain a lot and fade fast (as any red is prone to do), but the purples, greens, turquoise, flamingo, and yellow all last SO long. They’re so highly pigmented that I mix them with white conditioner to dilute them for a more pastel look, and they still come out bright and beautiful and fade gracefully. My favorite conditioner to use has been Sally’s jojoba oil moisturizing treatment with biotin and silk (recommended by an employee there), but I’ve used plain old suave and still had great results. I will usually leave this on for several hours or overnight in a shower cap. Since there’s no harsh chemicals or ammonia it does not damage hair and ends up feeling like a conditioning mask when rinsed. I think it smells great! My husband doesn’t like the smell but says it’s way better than boxed dye. It can stain your scalp and tub (some colors are worse than others). I recommend using vasoline around your hairline and ears (and removing any dye that found its way to these areas immediately after the application process before putting on a shower cap) and a good bleach based cleaner will take shower/tub stains right off as long as you use them right after rinsing (I’ve even had success doing this with just Clorox wipes). I’ve also used punky’s 3-in-1 shampoo to maintain purple and really liked the results. Pictures are of my latest work, using spring green and bright yellow (diluted 1:1 with Sally’s jojoba moisturizing treatment) and its still SO bright! Also included pictures using flamingo pink and turquoise (heavily diluted) on both me and my sister. The pink and turquoise mixed together make a beautiful purple shade, too! All pictures are diluted and applied to bleached hair, but I have also used this full-strength on virgin hair (natural blonde, dark blonde, and light brown) with great results! Keep in mind that on unbleached hair, it will not show up as bright or last as long, though. Colors will fade the quickest from any part that is exposed to sunlight (or excessive touching like bangs/around face). Hot water and frequent washing will also accelerate the fading process, so I use dry shampoo between washes, usually only wash 1-2x/week, use cold water on my hair, and also use a sulfate free shampoo & conditioner that is designed for maintaining colored hair. Everywhere I go, someone asks me about my hair... I swear, punky should be paying me for how often I recommend them! 😜

TL;DR My hair is purple, but i love it
Please note: this is the reviewer's 15 year old daughter and not, in fact, my 41 year old mother This was my first time using a semi permanent hair dye, so I was a bit nervous that it wouldn't take/would be a complete disaster. Fortunately, this was not the case! Some backstory: My natural hair color is dark brown, but I had dyed it a reddish color a few months back. That faded to a boring brown, just a few shades lighter than my roots. It did't look good, but it wasn't bad enough to declare a national state of emergency or anything. As you can imagine, it didn't take me long to get sick of having boring hair. I got to researching, and it was between this dye and Manic Panic. No shade, but its pretty clear that i made the right choice. When the dye arrived, i felt like a kid at Christmas! Right out the gate, i was in love with the smell. It literally smells like a cross between grape and strawberry candy. Amazing!! I did my test strip while watching a movie, and ended up leaving the dye in for 2 1/2 to 3 hours. It looked, well, Pink! I was psyched about how bright it was, and the fact that it even somewhat took over my roots. I set out to dye my hair in the morning and called it a night. Being a woman of my word, i hopped out of bed the next mourning, set out a few paper bags, and got to work. My half asleep self then got the bright idea to leave it in for 4 hours, because there isn't much difference between 4 and 2 1/2 hours, right? Wrong. Between the of making breakfast and the drinking of tea, i ended up leaving the dye in for about 5 hours. I'm not exactly saying this was a mistake, but I sure didn't get what i was expecting. After rinsing my hair and running outside to take a selfie, i discovered that it was... purple. Very purple. Not a violet purple, but more of a pinkish purple. Good thing i'm not picky!! It still looked amazing, so i wasn't too concerned about the color switch up. The only real con for this product is the fact that it stains EVERYTHING. I'm talking bathtubs, sinks, clothes, the whole nine yards. One Pro Tip i discovered was to mix a scoop of Oxi Clean in a bucket of hot water and pour it on the stains. Works wonders in just a few minutes! If you're on the fence about this product because of the possible damage often associated with color treatments, let me put your mind at ease; my hair is like a cannery in a cole mine for anything even slightly damaging. Once, when I gave it a dirty look, it refused to obey for a week and a half. This dye did not harm a hair on my head, just made it cool. The first picture was taken a few minutes after rinsing the dye out. The second picture was taken about three weeks after. As you can see, it didn't take very well over my roots, but I'm fine with that, as it means that i won't have to touch up my roots often.

Great Color, Some notes to get the best out of it
I was scowering Amazon for a easy, non toxic smelling hair dye that would wash-out eventually. When I read the reviews and came across this, I thought I'd give it a shot. Now, I am a person who uses box dyes on my hair (a cardinal sin, I know)- a lot. I dye my hair constantly. However since beginning of this year I have only dyed it once. So for Labor Day weekend I thought, what the heck- lets do a dye that will be easier on my hair. This stuff did not disappoint. PROS: -Color is a VIBE, it pops. I had hair that was half blonde, half light brown- and this worked great and shown after the initial dye. -Easy to apply- (put on some gloves for this cause or else you gonna be scrubbin it off your hands for a hot minute), however it was quick and painless to apply by myself. -Did not smell toxic at all, smelt like berries or something. -Color so far (two weeks) has lasted long after 5 hair washes in that time. I am using color-safe shampoo and conditioner. CONS -This stuff BLEEDS, and I mean Bleeds. If you don't use some oxi clean on your sheets, be prepared for that. It will wash out though, especially if you take care of it right away. On regular surfaces bleach cleaner knocks it out instantly. -I used the whole bottle on my hair- now I have THICK medium/shoulder length hair. The whole bottle was barely enough- next time I'll probably get two to be safe. Some notes: -After reading A LOT of reviews, i did the following and it worked well for me: 1) I used gloves when applying and tossed a "hair dye" towel over my shoulders. 2) I left it in for 2.5hrs- some reviews left it in longer but i am impatient. 3) When I rinsed it out I did it under cold water and i was in the shower for around 30 minutes just making sure I got it all out- give your head a little scrub with your hands too as it'll sit on your scalp in parts (as most dyes do). 4) I wore gloves when I rinsed it out as well, I did not get any color on my hands and honestly if you don't want that headaches, just wear some latex gloves. 5) I have a tub/shower combo and the tub/ curtain looked stained. In a panic I used some bleach cleaner and sprayed it on- came back in 5 minutes and it was all gone before I even scrubbed. Highly recommend that. 6) My biggest mistake was probably not using ANY shampoo and conditioner after first rinsing the dye out of my hair ( I didn't have any sulfate free or color safe at the time). When it dried it got all over my clothes, and my sheets. Not a TON but you know, enough to notice on light colors. I think this is were I messed up. 7) After I finally did a few washes with color safe shampoo/conditioner (i used dove brand) the bleeding onto items was significantly less. I would recommend using color safe conditioner during the first rinse and then color safe shampoo/conditioner every rinse after. It will still bleed in the shower every time you put shampoo in- but its not a lot/big deal as it is meant to rinse out in 25+ washes. 8) Don't wear light clothes with it until after maybe your 5th wash...trust me you'll thank me later. 9) the tip they give you when you buy it on the label it use aquaphor or vasaline on your hairline/ears is a lifesaver- do that. 10) if you have medium/long hair get two of these little jars- one is only enough for short and some types of medium hair length. Definitely get this is you want some fun color that won't last forever or need to bleach your hair for. My hair is dirty blonde/ more blonde on the bottom and it looks as vibrant as if I had bleached it. Great product overall! Will buy again to try some other colors!

Add h2O for perfect pink!
Not the best label instructions; I feel it works best with a few drops of water per swatch! Makes it actually smooth against the hair as due should be instead of globs of goo by itself. When diluting it with water, it creates a nice rich magenta hue dye. Add more water to make a nice pastel pink hue. It mixes well with other dyes, but still overpowers the color blending. Perfect mixture for pink-heads out there! It also keeps the hair safer, my hair’s been silky smooth and doesn’t need as frequent of washes. It’s REALLY pigmented, so be extra careful handling if any drips on counters, floors. And careful with washing as it stains the bathtub temporarily for a week. Has lasted me more than 6 months! I had to reapply a few times the first couple months after washes to get a consistent tone, but again, a little goes a long way with added water!

The color actually turned out great, a solid eggplant purple with neither too much ...
For background: I've been dying my hair for close to 8 years now, and I've used many different brands before, including Punky Color in the past. The color I purchased this time was Plum. So, I've been looking for a dark purple dye for a while now. I've had hair in just about every color, including mid to lighter purple, but really wanted something dark. My hair was previously silver (faded down from blue on bleached hair) with some light brown roots. The color actually turned out great, a solid eggplant purple with neither too much blue nor too much red. I might have liked it a little darker, but that's entirely my doing for putting this on previously bleached hair. If you have platinum blonde or white hair, expect this color to be pretty bright. If you're using it on non-bleached or darker hair, don't expect a bright color: you'll probably end up with more of a tint than anything. Overall, the color was great. My complaints lie in the actual coloring process. Like I've said, I've been dying my hair for years, and I've used many brands to dye my hair dozens of times. When compared to common store-bought brands or higher end brands, regardless of the actual color, Punky is a bit of a pain. I'd be extra cautious about using it if you've never dyed your hair or if you've only used store brands before. Put simply: It's REALLY messy. Of course you can do the standard things to be careful: wear gloves, coat your hairline and ears with petroleum jelly, put down plastic wrap/towels on your work space, etc. Still, the color is going to be a pain, and will stain any surface. For example, be EXTRA careful with your bathtub for the initial wash and subsequent few washes. It will stain!! Really, this is the only brand I've ever seen do this much damage to a bathroom. I suspect the over-concetration of pigment is to blame, even if it makes a good color on your hair. It will also stain every part of your skin. For example, as of my writing, the color is still very apparent on my hands, under my nails, and on my scalp. Plan ahead to be able to wash your hair at least twice before going out with this color. It will even stain your skin by just washing over it. During the initial washout, my hands and face were completely tinted purple, and I had to scrub hard with soap/cosmetic remover to get it to go away. A few smaller points for the product: -It's one of the only dyes I've encountered that's scented. The plum color has a STRONG grape flavor scent. It's a bit refreshing when compared to the harsh smells of some dyes, and it does leave your hair smelling nice, but I imagine this does more harm than good. Be wary if you're sensitive to scented products, or if you have animals/children in the house as you can smell the sweet scent even before it's opened. -The packaging is kind of disappointing when compared to other dyes or store-bought dyes. It came to me in a padded mailer and just a jar. It has a clear plastic shrink wrap on it (like you might find on a bottle), but no seal underneath the cap, meaning the underside of the cap is already covered in dye. The instructions are also printed on the reverse of the label (like a pill bottle) which makes it kind of difficult. I would have much preferred that the dye come packaged in a box like store-bought dyes with written instruction and a pair of gloves. I was lucky enough to already have disposable gloves. I understand they skip packaging to save money, but I would be fine paying a dollar or two more to see packaging that rivals store-bought dyes. -One positive note is that the dye comes premixed, meaning it can be stored safely for later use if you have extra for touch-ups and such. I didn't up having much extra though, even though I only have chin-length hair, so take note if you have long hair that you might need more than one package. -As I stated above, I've actually used this dye before, though it was years ago. It really hasn't changed since, which is a little disappointing. I still remember the strong sweet smell, the stained skin, and the stained bathtub. I put it down to just being inexperienced before or hoped it had improved, but the same is still true now. Overall, it's not a terrible product. It's definitely affordable in comparison to high-end dyes and getting it done in a shop, and the colors are strong and diverse. However, Punky dyes just have so many little problems that could easily be sorted, and the big problem of being so messy. I would stay away from this product unless you're more experienced with dying hair and can afford to get your bathroom a little colorful.

Loved this purple!!
I got the Punky Color dye in the shade Violet. The first pic is where i started, second is after bleach to show how light it was, and the rest are after dying it purple in a few different lightings. I chose this dye as it was pretty cheap, with decent reviews, and a cool toned purple. I started this journey wanting lavender hair, which I eventually semi-ditched as I came to realize that not only would it be hard to achieve well but also would not last me very long. Sooo.... I altered what i wanted for a cool-toned purple so it would eventually fade to a lighter purple color (instead of a warm-toned purple that would fade to more of a pink). It stuck really well to my bleached hair. I did dye my non-bleached eyebrows with it (which I was terrified to do as I had heard of this dye staining from other reviews) and it did not hold really at all, which I knew it wouldn't be a lot of color even if it did. I kind of just figured I would use the last bit of dye to see if it would tint my eyebrows enough to tie the look together. That being said, I wouldn't recommend to use this on dark hair. Although I toned my hair, I do think my hair was still a little warm toned (probably because either my hair was too wet when I applied the toner or because my hair wasn't light enough). That being said, despite that, my hair came out a very vivid cool-toned (for the most part) purple. It does look pretty warm-toned in warm lighting. It's been about two weeks now and it hasn't faded at all which I'm pretty happy with. It did kind of stain when rinsing, but it surprisingly did little damage to the tub. I rinsed the dye off by tipping my head over the tub and rinsing under the faucet. So I would say as long as the water is running or you can wipe any outlying spots quickly that I wouldn't worry. However I found that a little bleach easily wiped any bits that did stain off. Head and shoulders also did wonders when taking the dye off my eyebrows. That being said, despite not bleeding for a handful of days directly afterwards, it did start bleeding randomly on day #4 or 5, but stopped again after I washed my hair again. So, I wouldn't worry about that much either- just something look out for. My nails however are still purple lol. I definitely would recommend this dye.

Full Rainbow Achieved!
(Sorry this is long but I’ve used so many colors I figured it was worth it to give my notes! All photos are after first rinse and before first wash.) PHOTO 1: Flamingo Pink, Violet, Atlantic Blue, Turquoise, Apple Green, Bright Yellow, Flame, & Fire over level 9-10 (platinum blonde). Note I heavily blended the blues which is why those aren't as defined. No filter, indoor light. PHOTO 2: Violet over level 7-8 (dark blonde). As you can see it's still very saturated. No filter, sunlight. PHOTO 3: Turquoise over level 9-10 (platinum blonde). Snapchat filter made it a touch less green. This is the only hair dye I’ll ever use. It smells nice, leaves my hair conditioned, very very very saturated, thick formula, has a jar with screw lid, and has really good staying power in my hair. However I really recommend people do research on hair dyeing with semi-permanents before using it. All dyes like this will stain the first few washes and the dye will directly stain most surfaces, you won’t get vivid results without bleach, and some colors will permanently stain and need to be removed chemically or toned. Everyone's hair is different! Personally I ONLY wash in my stainless steel sink for the first 4-5 washes, with a black towel, and gloves. I use black pillowcases, and honestly it can and will stain light colored shirts if you’re not careful. The first week or even two it can come off on your hands especially in sweaty weather, but if that concerns you, just rinse with warmer water or shampoo - it’ll fade the colors a bit but it won’t be as dangerous to your skin/clothes. This dye is...a dye....it will stain your everything but I find it came off my skin and some surfaces with nail polish remover/acetone if I did it fast enough. I use dandruff shampoo and no color deposits or “color safe” products so keep that in mind with how long my colors last. I usually gradually increase my hair's "tolerance" by raising the temperature of the water with each wash until I get to my normal level. After about the 5th or 6th wash I can safely go in my shower with very hot water and clarifying shampoo and not worry too much but if you want to err on the safe side, wait longer. After 2 months most of the colors except red were still visible, though the blues did get overtaken by the green and the orange was very faded to almost nothing. After 5 months, yellow was the strongest stain, though you could still faintly see the violet, pink, turquoise, green, and orange but only in certain spots. COLOR NOTES: Flamingo Pink: A really good true pink, it’s warm-toned but not too much. It actually doesn’t fade as fast as I expected, even with shampoo applied directly to my scalp, it stays strong. Violet: Really deep color, a perfect jewel-tone. Glad they fixed it to be blue-toned. Fades slowly, over platinum it goes to light purple and over darker blonde it goes to mousy brown. The dye is very potent. I used it as a DIY purple conditioner but some random strands would have the purple "stick" to it and just be pastel instead of silvery. Atlantic Blue: Really nice deep blue, blended well with the Violet. Faded pretty fast and barely stained which is unusual for blues. Mine actually went almost right to silvery-blue. I’d actually prefer this as a DIY-toner or fade color to the Violet! Turquoise: One of my all-time favorites. Blue stains so this didn’t fade very fast but it does get a bit dingy towards the end of its lifespan. It can definitely go stronger on the teal if your hair base is yellow so take that into account. Apple Green: It is definitely a solid green, in between emerald and lime. I wish I had gone with the Spring but it is a lovely shade. Fades slowly, it did bleed a bit into the yellow. Bright Yellow: It is a “true” yellow in my opinion. This stains and barely fades at all because of the natural yellow in your hair. I will say this color despite the thick formula has no resistance to other colors such as green or orange because of how saturated they are, so be careful when doing multiple colors with this. Flame (Orange): Really nice color, fades somewhat fast but not as fast as I expected considering it’s a warm color. Perfect for fire hair or saturated auburn/ginger. Fire (Red): Absolutely love how red this is, it’s not pink or orange at all and can easily blend if you're doing other colors or want dimension. However, as is the nature of red dyes, it faded the fastest tied with Atlantic Blue. It was gone in a few washes, faded to a ginger-y orange.
