From one of today’s leading experts on the emerging science of the microbiome comes a ground-breaking book that offers, for the first time, evidence that the gut-microbiome plays a pivotal role in the health crises of the twenty-first century. In his acclaimed book, The Mind-Gut Connection, physician, UCLA professor, and researcher Dr. Emeran Mayer offered groundbreaking evidence of the critical role of the microbiome in neurological and cognitive health, proving once and for all the power and legitimacy of the “mind-body connection.” Now, in The Gut-Immune Connection, Dr. Mayer proposes an even more radical paradigm shift: that the gut microbiome is at the center of virtually every disease that defines our 21st-century public health crisis. Cutting-edge research continues to advance our understanding of the function and impact of the billions of organisms that live in the GI tract, and in Dr. Mayer’s own research, he has amassed evidence that the “conversation” that takes place between these microbes and our various organs and bodily systems is critical to human health. When that conversation goes awry, we suffer, often becoming seriously ill. Combining clinical experience with up-to-the-minute science, The Gut-Immune Connection offers a comprehensive look at the link between alterations to the gut microbiome and the development chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, as well as susceptibility to infectious diseases like Covid-19. Dr. Mayer argues that it’s essential we understand the profound and far-reaching effects of gut health and offers clear-cut strategies to reverse the steady upward rise of these illnesses, including a model for nutrition to support the microbiome. But time is running out: a plague of antimicrobial resistance is only a few decades away if we don’t make critical changes to our food supply, including returning to sustainable practices that maintain the microbial diversity of the soil. To turn the tide of chronic and infectious disease tomorrow, we must shift the way we live today. Review: We really are what we eat... - It's easy to accept the limited science that we learned in school as fact, but we all need to remember that as we peel back the onion (create new ways of discovering the unknown, perform continuing studies, understand that we can not neatly package each body part as a a separate piece--but as a whole), we can see a vast new world inside our bodies. This book is a must read to learn what we eat controls major parts of our lives... Sure, it's also a story that's written in the now and we shouldn't get stuck there, but it's a start to understanding our bodies. Review: Thought-provoking, well-researched, and practical. - This book connects the dots between our mental health, our gut microbiome, and our immune resilience in a way that feels both urgent and empowering. Dr. Mayer does an incredible job of taking complex neuroscience and immunology and making it understandable for the average reader. It has completely changed how I look at the connection between stress, my microbiome, and my overall immunity. It’s a resource I find myself returning to and recommending to everyone. A must-have for your wellness library!

Love this update to the 2016 original
Emeran is a pioneer in this field, I was eagerly anticipating a follow up to his 2016 original book that blew the roof off this topic. This follow up book captures the latest scientific findings and discoveries that frankly blew me away with how all encompassing the theories of mind-gut-immunity-soil-ecosystem are so intrinsically interlinked. Emeran outlines the clear science linking the connection of gut microbes to mental health and the chronic non-infectious disease epidemic impacting western society, the message is clear, food is our medicine and we need to change our food system. The final part of the book consists of amazing Mediterranean food recipes so the reader is left with no excuses for not setting themselves up for a lifetime of sound gut and general health. I’d recommend checking out the documentary ’The Game Changers’ that is mentioned in passing in the book, inspirational stuff!

A more in depth book about the gut
A more in depth book with science to back it up. I feel people who don't know much about their digestion would find this hard going. I found it fascinating but have been studying how the body works for many years so I already had some knowledge. The recipes in the back are helpful too.
