I wish to replace a double socket but have no room to the right only to the left of the socket, will this be suitable?

Hi, there are 3 screw holes which let you upgrade a single or double socket. The holes are just below the earth pin holes. On a double socket you can only use the outermost holes so you can't position left or right only centrally over the double socket hole. Dimension wise it is 3cm from left screw hole to the left edge and 5cm from right screw hole to right edge. Hope this helps.

Question 2

Does this item fit on to a 16mm deep back box (existing single wall socket) or does it need something deeper e.g. 25mm+?

This socket doesn't sit in the wall. It sits on the wall. The back box is only used to screw it to the wall so the back box can be any depth (will fit a single or double box). It does stick out a bit more than a normal socket but doesn't look too bad.One thing to note is if fitting to a single box you will have to make a hole in the wall. Not an issue if fitting to a double box.

Re: maximum combined load of 13A: does this mean I can plug in 3 devices, each with a 13A fuse in their respective plugs?

Yes the plug is designed for this purpose. I am assuming that you want to run 3 appliances at the same time.  However you should bear in mind that the total power of the 3 appliances you wish to connect to the plug should not exceed the capacity of the fuse protecting the ring main or you will be forever resetting your fuse box. You can find the total power of each appliance on its rating plate. Also bear in mind that you might also be using other appliances elsewhere in the house on the same ring main at the same time. Generally if it is a complete ring main it should be capable of carrying 54 amps if it is a spur off a ring main the capacity is only 27 amps. Although you are thinking of using 3 x 13 amp plugs in this triple socket check that the appliances you are using actually need a 13 amp fuse.
