This item isdecently machined and the gradations are finely inscribed. The "thumbwheel" is simple knurled rounded protrusion which allows you to slide the pieces of the calipers and is not a rack and pinion assembly, At least there is a locking screw. Built of relatively heavy aluminum (depth gauge appears to be steel) and fitted with a nice plastic case, this will nicely fit my general needs.

it's clearly been used and looks like it's been in an inside shop for years, cleaned up and resold. the guy talking about the thumb part was right, it's stagnant and doesn't rotate. im using it for unofficial measurements anyway, but if you want something decent don't buy this
