MusicNomad Diamond Guitar Fret End Dressing File E-File Tool (MN830)

I’ve watched other luthiers use this tool for a while and once I purchased one, I found out why it’s so popular. It makes the process simple and the results clean and smooth. I highly recommend

I purchased this for a few guitars that I have with sharp-ish frets. I am not a great player; as a matter of fact i'm a beginner. But the "ouch" was these frets on these guitars. My kids have a few that I purchased as well. sub $500 guitars and all of them have sharp frets. So this tool did a great job in filing them down. Go slow. contour your tool a bit so that you can "shape" the fret ends so you aren't giving it a bevel but a nice rounded cap - if that makes sense. The tool itself is made very well. I am a stickler for high quality tools (Whia, Wera, Milwaukee, Vessel, etc.,) and this Music Nomal dressing file is wonderful. I would only like to see a contact in color on the non cutting edge. This way you don't make the rookie mistake as I did by going too fast and not focusing on what it was that I was doing. I rotated the file a few times by mistake and thus dug a slight bit into my fretboard - Granted it was a cheap Jackson Dinky guitar; the point is that you need to go slow. Being visually impaired I decided to alleviate that future mistake by using a black (or blue) Sharpie marker on the smooth ends of the file (not the diamond coated cutting edges). That way when I see the black (or blue or red, etc.) that the color is showing - go. The color won't cut. Yes there is an arrow on the handle, but that's harder to see then the cutting/shiny surfaces- Anyway a great tool. I don't think i'll use it more then once; unless I buy another guitar that wasn't built well. Oh and be sure to cover your pickups - they are magnetic and guess what else is? The filings from the frets....

It filed down my Stainless Steel frets that were sticking out the sides of my guitar !!! Worked great, and I'll use it on another guitar soon !!! Like the handle and shape. Easy to work with. First time doing it though, so I'm no pro, but it worked well and did the job !!! 5 Stars !!!

This is a great file that is easy to use and did make a big difference in an acoustic guitar I had that had fret ends I thought could be smoother. The handle is ergonomic and two sides of the file are totally smooth, as is the tip, so you realize can’t damage your guitar as you use it. Just make sure to watch some videos so you get the angle right - you’re not supposed to file it flush. Also, they put an arrow on the handle to let you know which file side is the coarser side, but to be honest I found it confusing because the arrow pertains to how you’re holding the handle when it should have just pointed to the coarser side itself. It’s technically pointing towards one of the totally smooth “safe” sides. Music Nomad also sells a B-File with the wooden handle but that is really more for actual fret sprout, not smoothing out fret ends.

Very good and comfortable

This is well thought out tool, essentially similar to other fret files. The innovation here is the handle, which would be great on a screwdriver, but since filing fret ends is a delicate business, I found I got better and more precise results my with my Stew Mac file which is smaller and held with your fingertips. I also found I could sense how much I was taking off the fret better with the conventional teeth of the Stew Mac file vs. the diamond surface on this file. Still, this is good tool and not overhyped like some other Music Nomad stuff. If you need a fret end file this is a perfectly good choice.

I purchased this dressing file to finish my frets (round them out) after a fret sprout job with MusicNomad's b-file. It was the first time I used such a file but the online videos from MusicNomad and others make it pretty easy to understand. With a little practice it gets better. It did what I wanted it to do very easily and without much pressure at all. The file only needs a light touch since the diamond coating really digs through the metal of the frets with very little effort. The handle is ergonomically designed to make the job easy and it won't slip in your hands. I was hesitating between this one and the StewMac's. Both are comparatively priced. Since I like MusicNomad's products so much, I decided to take a chance on this one as well. It's the first time I work with a diamond coated file, I don't know how long it's supposed to last compared to a conventional file that can last forever. I hope it lasts for many other jobs. As far as how good it works, I have absolutely no complaints. The diamond coating rounds the metal of the fret bevels with remarkable ease.

Ein gutes Werkzeug, das man zwar selten braucht aber wenn, dann ist es gut das richtige Tool zu besitzen. Allerdings muss man anmerken, dass der Preis wohl dem Nischenmarkt geschuldet ist und man kann überlegen, ob eine "normale" Feile für gelegentliche Anwendung nicht auch reichen würde.
