Great deal for the money
For £45 (what I paid, they are more like £60 at Screwfix) this is amazing value. I bought it to plane a wavy door frame that was causing issues in the middle of a new door, and clearly had been installed badly in the 80s when the house was remodelled. Is it the best made Rebate plane, no.. but it is good enough, it honed ok, and once adjusted did the job well, taking off even amounts of material. If I was using it every week or every day I would buy a better one, but I will use this once in a blue moon, so it's fine.

Pleasantly surprised by Faithfull quality ... again
I had several Faithfull planes already before ordering this one. I have found them very significantly cheaper than vintage Stanley and Record equivalents available from sites such as Ebay ... let alone offerings from the boutique manufacturers of new planes like Veritas and Lie Nielson. And, so far ... despite the many negative comments I have encountered in reviews ... every one has been accurately machined and well-presented. I have put time into improving the finishing and adjusting to my own preferences. But I have never been disappointed. All, and most especially the giant no. 7, have performed really well after an hour or two's preparation. For a serious hobbyist on a modest budget, they have been excellent both in terms of value and in terms of performance. Maybe they would lose out against the alternatives in a beauty contest ... but I don't care about how pretty my woodworking tools are, only that they really work and that, together, we get the job done. Buying Faithfull's No. 10 still felt like taking a big risk, however. There's a lot that can go wrong with a rebate plane and I was particularly concerned that the sole would not be flat/smooth. I needn't have worried ... the plane's geometry was perfect out of the box ... no flattening required ... sides were clean and square to the sole (not that that really matters ... I will not be using this for shooting board ends!). The frog was well seated in the body of the plane and the points of contact were cleanly and accurately machined. All the fixing and adjustment screws were properly aligned. Disappointments?: The cutting iron is pretty thin as with most Faithfull planes. I expected chatter ... but in practice there isn't a problem. It's the same with my other Faithfull planes, which also all work well despite light blades ... honourable exception is the exceptionally fine Faithfull No.7, which sports a heavy iron and cuts like a hot knife through butter. The plane comes coated with some strangely evil lacquer that is amazingly difficult to remove. Using a combination of steel wool, 360 wet and dry paper, metal polish (Brasso), disk brake cleaning fluid, and a lot of elbow grease, I got the plane clean in about three unpleasant hours. On the positive side ... it was totally rust-free. My impression is that whoever it is in India that actually manufactures Faithfull tools produces more exotic planes like the No.10 only every now again and that they typically get stored for a pretty long time before they are sold. Coating them with some vile compound to resist erosion is probably very necessary. But it's a PITA for the people who buy them. I can live with it.

Great value!!!!
Received this very promptly once ordered, I've not sharpen it yet ,but the plane is a nice bit of kit well worth the money, I've being in wood working for over 30 years And handled a lot of tools so you get a feel for quality tools, this is Its not completely perfect...!! I have noticed a few imperfections but they are minor items which I feel I can sort out, Hence four stars ! This is a good all round plane which I feel it will become my favourite go to plane for everyday use( update 11/01/18 I've been using this plane for the last few months Great bit of kit needed a bit of tinkering with, but worth it has the lightness of a smoothing plane But the body of a Jack plane bought a new blade for it but not used it yet ...!! the faithful blade sharpens up well I love using this plane !!! Seem such a versatile bit of kit ,my only regret is that I did not buy the block plane from Faithfull as well!! I would recommend them to anyone who requires good quality tools at fair prices !!

Get what you pay for?
I know! I bought a Faithfull plane at under forty pounds! What did I expect!.. Well as it turns out, far less than I got! It`s a beaut`!! Yes I had to give the blade a little attention (But come on! Lets not pretend that`s a chore!) But the sole itself was perfect! It cuts like a dream, yes I could have dropped lucky on this one but trust me, good luck and me don`t cross paths often, so I doubt that one! Would I recommend these? You bet I would! Having bought Stanley planes that were disgraceful and took a lot of time to make good, this was a pleasure! I have only one criticism and that is the blade adjustment needs care! Do not discount these planes! They are true value for money.

This really is a case of you get what you pay for
The Faithfull No.10 Rebate Plane is cheap, and it shows. The first thing to note - and this is nothing to do with it being cheap - is that the plane will arrive completely blunt. This is common, but you must ensure that you have a good set of sharpening stones/tools/whatever, because without spending a good hour or two on preparing the plane, you will get absolutely nowhere. Not only does it arrive blunt, but you need to read the outside of the box, because you will also need to add the second bevel (the main bevel is set at 25 degrees, but you will need to grind or sharpen in the main cutting bevel at 30 degrees). Obviously, you will need to strip and clean the plane, because it is covered in grease or oil (it comes in plastic bag inside a cardboard box, so this is clearly to guard against rusting when it is stored in stockrooms). Anyway, the play on the mechanism is considerable, and the base is not really that true. The "quality" brass fittings are not that special, and the hardwood handles are very small - almost too small for an adult male hand - making the plane uncomfortable to work with. But in amongst that list, probably the thing that is most worrying is that the base is not that flat, and you will have to work on flattening it down to get it to be half-decent. The blade itself feels very soft, so I'm unconvinced that it will hold an edge for long, and any attempt to grind it on a wheel (unless you are using a water cooled grinder) will result in further softening of the metal to the point that it would be useless. You would need to work-harden it to get something that can take and hold and edge. So, at the end of the day, what you have is a cheap plane, that is neither awful nor wonderful. For the money, and if you are prepared to put in several hours work stripping, cleaning, flattening and sharpening, then you could end up with a plane with small handles that is not that comfortable to use if you have hands much larger than a ballerina's, but would suffice for the occasional job. If you intend to plane things on a regular basis, forget this Faithfull product. An aside - for this money, I wasn't expecting a Lie Nielsen - and it would be unfair to compare the two: they are at such different price points that a comparison would be meaningless. But it is important to note that the Faithfull Rebate Plane only just passes muster for being any use at all, and then only after you put in a good deal of effort. So if you're thinking of buying the Faithfull as, say, a present, then bear in mind that it might not be that well received.

excellent value for money
I think for the money, it is excellent. I noticed that several people commented that the blade arrives blunt. Well all the new planes I have bought over the years all need honing in to your requirements. In fairness, it states that the 30 degree angle needs adding on both the box and on the back iron/ chip breaker plate (I think?). If you just need a plane just to get a door to fit, you could do a lot worse than this, but get some diamond whetstones (you do not need to pay a lot of money) and just give the blade a hone. If you need expert help and want to hone to a high degree, look at Paul Sellers on YouTube, on how to sharpen a plane blade. I spent a bit of time honing, (2 minutes), cleaned the oil off the plane, reset the back plate/chiop breaker plate and centralised the fine adjust wheel and away I have gone. I notice the cast iron body is coated in a heavy wax or something, but that soon wore off in the areas that I expected. Adding a very light coating and a polish off of some beeswax on the sole plate will help good planing as well.

Incredible they can sell at this price nowadays
Fantastic value for money. Ok it's not high tolerance stuff but this is a really solid and well designed tool that does the job it's designed to do and I suspect will last. The finish is actually quite good and the blade is even reasonably sharp out of the box! Presumably a cast from old record or stanley tools of yester year that's been acquired and put back into service by faithful (whoever they are..). That said, mine had a slight misalignment in the blade grind (easily corrected or compensated for with the controls) and I had to send the first deliver back as it was broken in transit.

Not recommended
I do not recommend this plane especially for a beginner. The blade was blunt and took more than quick session with the whetstones. I have never before bought a bladed tool that was blunt. The cast iron carcass is good though the throat is a little small though this can be adjusted. The blade adjuster has so much slack it makes adjustment challenging. If I put the blade in it sticks out to far past the sole to be usable.(The cut is too thick.) I had to pull against the adjuster play when fitting the blade to have sufficient movement to set the blade to a usable depth before hitting the adjuster end stop. When I got it the plane had not been set up properly and I wondered if it had previously been returned. Due to schedule changes I did not use it in the 28 days for returns otherwise I would have returned it. The price was incredibly cheap for what it is. A bit of attention to detail and it would be a superb product.
