does this work for the old 3ds

You would need the "NFC Reader/Writer (Nintendo 3DS)" accessory to be able to scan Amiibo on the "old 3DS" systems. If you search on amazon, this is available for purchase. Once you have this accessory, yes it work with the "old 3DS".
