Unbeatable Value for Budget-Conscious Smart Home Security
It is genuinely tough to find a security camera at this price point that punches this far above its weight class. The Tapo C120 packs high-end features like crisp 2K video resolution, built-in dual spotlights for color night vision, and an IP66 weatherproof rating into a compact, puck-sized design that works just as well mounted on an outdoor patio as it does sitting on a babyโs nursery bookshelf. The magnetic base and ten-foot power cord make physical setup effortless, allowing you to position it on any metallic surface or wall mount without dealing with complex wiring or dead batteries. What really makes this camera stand out from the competition is how much tech TP-Link gives you without nickel-and-diming you for a monthly subscription. The on-device AI detection accurately identifies people, pets, and vehicles right out of the box, and it even includes specialized audio detection for glass breaking or a baby crying. Pair that smart detection with local recording support for microSD cards up to 512GB, and you have a reliable, full-featured security system with zero recurring costs. It easily earns its Editors' Choice award by delivering premium, clear monitoring without the hidden fees.

My first love . . .
I've only been using a week but I already love this camera. I have been using the WYZE cameras and have refused to pay monthly for detection settings and notifications. This camera does all of this out of the box. In fact, it can distinguish between a person, pet, vehicle and general motion. Responsiveness is very timely . . . I had been using it to watch for some amazon deliveries so they don't get stolen and as a result, I was able to intercept those package by meeting the person at the door (plus I had foot surgery so I needed their help sliding the boxes inside the doorway). It also alerted me that my neighbor was shoveling my sidewalk and driveway for me. It is on point, IMO. So many more settings - it puts the wyze to shame. Quality of the image is excellent and night time vision is also great. I was also able to get an alert when and where my cat was jumping up on the counter - again, I've intercepted this "issue" and was able to resolve (lint roller tape, upside down loaded mouse traps; only took once). Mobile app is great - just had no issues setting it up. Can't be more happy. Wasting money on monthly subscriptions is ridiculous but I'm frugal.

Not sponsored/paid. Love this thing.
Okay, so, I realize there's an issue with people being given free product/posting reviews/whatever. I am NOT one of those people. I actually had a TP-Link branded minion(yes, that minion. It's adorable lol) that I used to watch pets and house while I was away prior so I knew of the brand. Anyway, I got this little guy for like $15 after seeing it on Slickdeals (if you don't have the app, you SHOULD. it will save you tons of money.) Okay, explanation aside, I love this thing. I actually have blink cameras in other areas and am highly considering replacing them with Tp-Link cameras because of ease of use. The app is so cool honestly, I was shocked. Literally everything is in the app. By everything I mean all the "smart home" options. You can control ALL of your (TP-Link)devices from this app, not just the cameras. With that said, people keep calling this "subscription free", and in my opinion it is NOT. You do get a free trial of cloud storage, but you have to pay after that expires. Additionally, instead of paying per time period or storage amount or anything else, you pay per device. You can pay per month, or yearly. I chose yearly, one device, for around $29, which in my opinion is fair. If I picked monthly at 4.99, it would have been around $60 after a year- so double the price. As I said before, the amount goes up depending on how many devices you have. They also seem to offer occasional promotional-type sales, so I think I saved a few dollars because of that (prices were marked through.) With that said, you might be able to get those subscriptions for a much better price if you watch those sales. We have a buttnugget of a neighbor who likes to regularly hit/putt golf balls at the house and does other stupid stuff so I didn't want to risk not having saved cloud storage, so instead of waiting on a better sale I just went ahead and bought the subscription. I don't know how other people are getting away with saying there's no subscription fee. I mean, after the subscription expires, the most I found it could do was provide a live feed. On the bright side, if there is a gap in coverage (like there was for me) all of your videos that you missed are obviously still kept somewhere, because re-subscribing results in all of that 'activity' to update and become immediately available. Take that how you will. I thought it was pretty neat. Okay, now for the technicalities. I was dumb and installed it upside down somehow. Filled with anguish due to the thought of having to climb the ladder that barely reaches the flood light again- i found a setting in the app. INVERT. This thing is dummy-proof, I swear. Whoever made this needs a raise. The 2k quality is, in fact, 2k. Another reason I purchased this was because my blink cameras have a max quality of like 1080p, and as far as I could tell, none of the blink cameras (even new ones) had anything more than that- but considering how blurry it was the last time the neighbor managed to break the house light while "golfing" at the house, I wanted something with a bit more clarity. The night vision is also really damn good. All of my blink cameras just kind of show a big white spot at night, but the Tapo has no issues. It also sorts videos for you- you can tell it to not store things like- pets, vehicles, etc. Obviously, Tp- Link probably pays people for some of the reviews. That's why I'm leaving mine, so y'all will know what's real and what's not. I realize this is incredibly long, I'll probably come back and shorten it later. I just wanted to throw my observations out there in case someone was eyeing this dude and needed some real answers. Oh! One more thing. During this most recent hurricane in Georgia, a tree fell on the house right where my little Tapo was. I couldn't even check him until the tree was removed. His last recorded video was quite literally of the tree hitting the house. (Not to worry, we are okay.) Anyway, if you ever have a burgular or something knocks out your little Tapo, apparently it will somehow manage to upload that clip to the cloud before being unplugged/dying. I'm not sure if it has a small battery backup or what, but I was super impressed with that. Further, turns out, the tree only managed to 'unplug' the Tapo. I'm gonna start calling him lucky. Oh, and, unlike the blink, it doesn't need a stupid sync module!

Great little camera
I'm giving this camera 5 stars based on using it as an indoor camera where the 120degree field of view is sufficient for the rooms in my home. The picture is very clear. I love the fact that I don't need to use a hub with this camera, it uses a sd card to use local storage rather than the cloud. This little camera also does a great job detecting my dogs if I put the camera on my desk where as my other brand camera won't pick up the dogs unless the camera is high up. Even without a subscription the recordings will show if it's a person or animal. I also like the fact it doesn't need a battery.

Great, but App will not continuously record w/o SD card
Having used other Wi-Fi cameras including Google Nest cams (and much more expensive pro & semi-pro security hardware), as well as having a career in electronic & broadcast engineering, I think Iโm uniquely qualified to give this a fair unbiased review! First off itโs phenomenal for the money. Better resolution and more features than previous generation Nest cameras for a fraction of the price. While the hardware is seemingly not as durable as some competitors, at this price theyโre more or less disposable! There was one surprise for me that everyone should be aware of (that if I had done a little research, I probably would have figured out before purchasing on a whim during Amazon prime days)! Unlike other services I have used, when you use the TAPO app (which I paid for a years worth upfront for 4 cams) just be aware it only streams live, and then records segments to the cloud when there is motion detected. If you want to record continuously, every cam has to have an SD card installed. The app then uses the memory locally on the SD card to playback segments (but of course is limited by the memory of the card). Then like other systems (and dash cams), it just starts rewriting over older video/audio. The app is very intuitive and functional although I would like to be able to monitor all cameras at once (which may be possible as Iโve only played with it a couple of days). Installation was a breeze and simple. Very intuitive for non-tech people. Overall, Iโm extremely pleased with the performance &bfeatures. Time will tell about durability and Iโm sure their app will probably get some upgrades over time. A very competitive product. I wouldโve given it five stars if for the $119 for a year of 4 camera service, it would record continuously into the cloud. That way, if you have a break-in the cameras are destroyed, the full recording is remotely saved.

This camera is great!
I have previously owned other cameras, where I have it inside and point out my front window. However, this is the absolute best I have had so far! Other models require a subscription - this one doesn't! (You can purchase an SD card that will record everything - and it holds a lot, too!) It takes a little bit to navigate the app, but I have it set up to record everything on a loop, and then identify (over the course of the whole recording) when a person passes by the field. I bought a 250GB card, and so far it has recorded 3 weeks of video. I previously had a camera that would upload to my google drive, and that only recorded up to 1 week. This video is also higher quality, and much cleaner than the old camera. Others cannot identify anything across a window - this one does! Granted this is much newer and technology has gotten TONS better over time. It will "tag" every person in the field, and then provide markers in my recording indicating when a person crossed the field. This is far more data-rich than my other cameras (across a window). As far as "night vision" - I have found that if you set it on night vision, this will not work across a window. It will only reflect a light on the window and back to the camera. However, the low light sensitivity is excellent on this camera, as it will take the low level of light on the street and boost the video signal so that it can actually see ok at night on its own. Pretty good! It isn't as clean as my ring camera's IR night vision, but it is still good. And definitely worth the sacrifice of not having to pay for a subscription. The one thing I would appreciate for the camera are some accessories to help extend the stand (make it taller) and make it more stable, as I currently have it balanced right at my window. But it has been doing the job, pretty well, as is. Highly recommend!

Excellent Product With Excellent Support
Excellent Product With Excellent Support: the cameras are easy to install and the Tapo app essentially sets them up quickly. and easily. The app works well and the video feedback is great allowing you to save it and forward it to others. The tech support quickly responds to inquiries and when I had to reset one camera, Hayden at tech was not only fast to respond but had the perfect answer to quickly solve my issue. Highly recommend.

Could use improvements...
Not a bad little camera for the price! I paid around $40, which I knew I was comfortable shelling out for my needs. If you live in a condo and HOA restricts Ring doorbells or anything installed on the exterior of the building, this would definitely be a solution for you. It's definitely a cheaper alternative than the Ring doorbell. What I like: 1) Picture quality. I don't know about 2K but it's pretty clear and vibrant. Night vision is excellent but I have a pretty well lit patio. Way better than the Ring doorbell I owned that cost much more. 2) MicroSD card slot. You can have local storage and not pay for a subscription Cloud service. Options are always better than none! 3) The App. It's pretty basic but that's a good thing. Brings up recorded video pretty quick. I'm not the smartest person and it was easy to set up and get it working. (Unless the fact that it was easy for me makes me...smart??lol) 4) Wired. I hate worrying about batteries and charging. I have too many devices that I already need to do that for. Keep in mind that if your power goes down, the camera is useless. I'm considering adding an external power bank to resolve this. 5) Price. It always comes down to value and in my opinion this product definitely provides that. What I don't like: 1) Motion detection. While setting up the motion zone works very well, I find that the camera misses some activities, cuts it short, or slow to load up on the app sometimes when not on wifi. An example is, I get a notification or alert on my phone...I tap to access the recording...and it either doesn't show up and takes me to the live view or the processing time is slow. If you've own a Ring camera, you would have had experience with this also. I would say 97% of the time it would detect motion normally and those 3% that it misses could be the deciding factor for you. But let's be real, if you want a security camera to catch bad guys doing bad things, you shouldn't be looking at a $40 camera to get that job done. You're in the wrong price point for doing that. 2) Sound quality. Pretty terrible and I don't even use it. 3) USB-C Cable connection. Some reviewers mentioned they had a hard time keeping the camera powered on. Could be true if they didn't push the cable in snugly. I was trying to manage the cable, trying to conceal it for aesthetic purposes, and the camera turned off. I look at the connection at the camera and the wall charger and it appear to be connected. I did a quick wiggle just to check. After a few minutes of it not coming back on, I decided to unplug the cable from both ends. When I pushed it in the back of camera, it still needed an extra firm push to get it in all the way. I'm wondering if people don't realize this when they report that their cameras don't work. Conclusion: I really like this camera and am considering getting another one. On the app it says my camera is 1/32. Not sure if it can support that many but I know I can add more cameras seamlessly unlike other systems. I would definitely recommend. 4/5 stars is fair since it is definitely not perfect.

Tapo C120 is what I have been looking for, very happy with the camera and tech support.
I have been looking for a security camera for pointing outside my house mainly for monitoring if anyone coming to the house (for delivery etc), any vehicle going to my drive way or park outside my house, and any pets (or racoon) wondering outside my house especially at night. The C120 is exactly what I am looking for. I've been using the tapo C120 for just one month and very happy with this product and the tech support. It got all the features I've looking for among different brands and models, picture quality is quite good day and night, live and recorded video very smooth, small foot print to be mounted on the window frame, flexible camera arm for pointing at the exact angle easily, very considerate magetic base plate and double side tape for simple installation without the need for drilling nor screwing. It has about 5 sec pre-recording when the motion is detected so you won't miss anything right at the beginning of the moment the motion detected, multiple detect zone which so flexible that not confined to just rectangular shape like to older model, detection of person, vehicle and pets work just great, night vision is very clear without the need of infra red or spot light (especially useful when I put the camera behind the window pointing outside the house), quite happy with the motion detection response which is very fast (both day and night time). More important, technical support is very good, I found the recorded video is jerky a couple of times at the beginning of the video, contacted tech support with sample video sent to them, unexpectedly, they responsed the next day and even got a firmware update for me within a week and the problem seems resolved now, of course I will monitor the issue for the next couple of weeks to make sure it is really fixed (which I think it is), also tech support (Ian Xu) responses very fast with good follow up which is another star added.
