How do i know if i have a bad valve?

Most people replace the fireplace valve for one of two reasons: first - the pilot light will not stay on when you release the pilot knob, and second - the valve will not turn the main burner on when the switch is engaged. Before you replace your valve, make sure you do the following things. Clean and blow out the pilot flame assembly so that it has a really strong flame heating the thermocouple and thermopile. Change your thermocouple if the pilot will not stay lit, even after holding it for several minutes. Change the thermopile if the valve will not open and ignite the main burner. Rule out bad wiring or control device (switch, remote control, thermostat) by bypassing the device. To bypass, touch a small jumper wire to the TH and THTP terminals on the valve. This will open the valve and allow the main burner to ignite. Only replace the valve when everything else has been tried

This is a low voltage valve that get it's power from the heat from the pilot light using a thermopile.

What is the max btu this valve will allow?

This model is used on vent free product which are capped at 40,000 BTU. If you are looking for a valve for vented products with higher BTU look at 0820652.

Is there a way to convert an lp log to natural gas ?? my valve is a sit-820 0820642

I would not covert a ventless product. You are better off buying the complete burner in the correct gas.
