I Sushi Premium Sushi Rice 5kg

As a Chinese person living in Britain who eats rice on a near-daily basis, I’ve been buying this short-grain white rice for years and it never disappoints and lasts me months. Recently I bought the IKEA 2.3 litre dry food jar with lid, and I was shocked that it only holds less than half the rice in the bag. For how much rice you get, it’s well worth the price.

The rice taste good and great value for money. I was actually unsure if the rice is good enough as it’s quite reasonable compare to other Japanese rices. So I read other reviews, and researched what is “東北大米 - Dongbei rice”. And by knowing Dongbei rice, I was quite sure that this should be good. - and yes, I was right! It’s very similar to Japanese rice and I’m happy with the product. Will definitely purchase it again.

Reviewed September 2024: Considering the price, this is very good value. There are better options out there, but when they cost 3 times the price, this is excellent value. For reference, I do get to Japan for work a couple of times a year, and I do come home with rice from the super market, so we're spoilt a little, but this is fine when we've ran out (we get through about 30 kgs of rice a year) We cook this with a rice cooker, and use it as 'day to day' rice, we have not made sushi with it, and its unlikely we ever will. We noticed that the grains are on the smaller size compared to some other options, and there seemed to be a lot of broken grains also. It needs a good wash before cooking, and its better with a mix of about 1 1/4-1 1/2 parts water to one part rice. It tastes fine, even my (very) fussy wife doesn't mind it, although it doesn't seem particularly sticky for sushi (although we've not cooled it and mixed it with rice vinegar, which might change the consistency).

It's not sushi rice, but it's a very high quality sticky rice. And at a very good price. High quality proper sushi rice goes £30/5kg, so naturally this is not sushi rice, the branding in English is called i Sushi Premium for some reason but not in Chinese... Might be a bad translation. The rice, properly cooked is fluffy and sweet. Has a very soft texture and cooks as new rice, not old. At least all the batches I got. I used to buy another brand but I'm staying with this one for the time being.

There are many grade for sushi rice which is type of short grain rice. This one of the cheapest on the market, taste good. Its not sticky rice but sticky enough more than medium rice ( thai jasmine rice ). If you cook whit the right amount of water, it can be turn into sticky fluffy rice whice really delicious when hot, we eat this as everyday rice. Only occasionally make sushi or kimbab. Just dont treat this rice like basmanti rice, or soak for hours. The best way cook this with rice cooker, which only take 30 mnt to cook.

I have been buying this Sushi rice for >7 years and my past experience is always good. But the quality of the rice I recently bought is no good - the rice appears to be a mixture of sizes with a high proportion being broken fragments. The colour and taste of the cooked rice are also not as good as before - a bit of dull colour and also lack the fresh rice taste. There is no chance that these rice can be used for sushi - really disappointing. Absolutely not happy with the current buy.
