Review: 100% Recommended by Off Gridder!! - This is a good MPPT charger. I can set my own battery parameters using the MT50 monitor.Other off grid folks notice the same problem I used to have with my old chargers...a lot of times my old charger would go in float and shut my solar array off and I would be running things off my battery bank during sunlight hours!!! I have a large battery bank and have set absorb to 3 hours and would have set it for more hours because my batteries can be in absorbtion or boost charge for 12 hrs. I set my float charge up to 14.5 volts. I want my batteries charging as long as the panels can gather energy and I definitely do not want to be running off batteries before it is night time. I could not figure out what my earlier chargers were doing in float but they allowed my batteries to drain a little in afternoon and then kick back into charge mode when a preset low volt level was reached in float mode. This usually occurred right about the time the sun was setting so my batteries would not be at the maximum charge and surface charge as I headed to night time. Check your settings on your charger if you are off grid and your battery bank voltage at night. It took me a summer to figure out was going on and made me mad to find the sun was shining and I was running my home off the batteries instead of the panels!!! I love all my free daytime solar power..crank my freezer up full blast and charge up all my tools, phones, computers, run tools etc. After my batteries are full all the surplus electricity is free!! This Solar Epic has a 20 amp load outlet and shows the battery being charged and the load powered by your panels. Love the Solar Epic and have extra current and panels ( not over 130 volts) hooked to it so the charger is always getting max power to it. You can have more than 40 amps going into it but do not go over 130 volts. READ THE OWNERS MANUAL! UPDATE...unit is working great!!! The tracking seems to react quickly to passing clouds etc that some reviewers had complained was slow. I may buy another unit in the future. UPDATE.. I bought another of these Solar Epic chargers and added more panels. I have the MT52 remote for lithium batteries now and put MT52 remotes on both chargers. I have ten panels on each charger but keep the voltage way below the max of 150 volts...the excess amps are handled by the charger to a max of 40 amps. I also replaced my lead acid batteries with Eve 304 lipo4. Yahoo! I will probably be building bigger. I added a 43" TV and new freezer...off grid life is good with all this new technology and drastically lower price on panels and lithium cells! I already have a panel up with room for a couple more of these Solar Epic chargers. I noticed Will Prowse on YouTube had good things to say about this charger (I hope I am allowed to include this). I have electricity when the power is out!
Review: Solid charge controller - Knocked off a star because temperature sensor went bad in a few months. Purchased this controller in April based on reviews and came highly recommended by Will Prowse. Three months in the temperature sensor went bad. At 94° it said my battery temp was -1C (30°) and shut down my solar to protect the battery. I contacted the seller and they were quick to respond which was a plus. The problem though is that apparently they have no replacement parts. They messaged they would send a replacement temperature sensor but that it comes from the manufacturer and would take awhile. I don't know what awhile is in actual time and I'm hoping it's before cold weather but will update on seller follow through. The charge controller itself is solid and does its job well. Update New sensor arrived. We're using this controller with 400watts of solar in series and a 300amp hour battery to keep our 12 volt compressor fridge going in triple digit heat. It does the job and it does it really well. Big thank you to the seller for follow through and getting us a new sensor. Added fifth star even though there was an issue because sometimes things just happen and the seller was on the ball and made it right. Would purchase again.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: I have 8 100w 12v panels. Which is better?: Two 48v arrays in parallel or one 96v array?**
A: First note, most panels labeled as "12V" will actually put out ~18V in ideal conditions. Knowing that, 4 of those panels at ~18V will create 72V when wired in series. Trying to do 8 panels in series will create near 150V (and open circuit voltage is often ~22V which could become 176V), so I'm pretty sure that forces you to just do the 4 panel groups to stay under the 150V limit.
Also I hope you're doing 24V batteries with that many panels because that's way too much for 12V. These controllers take in all the power they can from the panels and convert the power to the battery charge power needed (which is part of the "Maximum power point tracking" feature). With the 8 panels sending in power like ~72V 10A, the controller accepts that and converts it to ~24V 30A (much like how a AC transformer works). If you were expecting it to go to 12V that much power would be ~60 amps at 12V that's well over the 40A rating. That's why they say "Max ~500 watts at 12V" while "Max 1000 watts at 24V" (and you can run the numbers yourself of 12V * 40A= 480W and 24V * 40A = 960W).

**Q: Will this work for solar and wind turbine together ?**
A: Hi, it works with solar panel ONLY. Not working with turbines.

**Q: what are the minimum and maximum charge limit settings in the user mode? I would like to use a 6S lithium battery.**
A: I’d buy a better charge controller like a MidNite Classic, these don’t last much more than 18 months and they are not as customizable as the Classic controllers are

**Q: What is the PV operating voltage, minimum and max input voltage for 12 volt system.**
A: From my experience with these charge controllers I have found that the low end cut off for operation is around 14 volts. I wired all my panels in series to get around 132 volts. Beware, the figure of 150 volts in the instruction manual is for minimum operating temperature, go with the other figure in the manual of 138 to be safe.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent performance but beware of Li-ion compatibility
*by C***N on August 2, 2018*

Excellent controller. This is now my third Tracer (sold by SolarEpic) MPPT solar controller. This is installed in my RV with 3 100w Renogy in series charging two 6v golf cart batteries in series. Another charging a 4 6v golf cart battery system wired in 24vdc. A third is charging a 12vdc system charged by 2 Renogy 100w solar panels on a solar tracker I built. This one has been charging the batteries for 3 years now without a hitch. The original batteries are still there and are still working. This controller has no fans and is built very rugged. It has been withstanding the jars and jolts of our travels with no problem. We have the output of this controller in parallel with our original RV charger so when needed we still can plug in the AC to our RV. It is absolutely quiet making no noise and produces little heat with our 300w system. The MT50 panel monitors both the input and output status of our system and is momentarily lit for night operation. As someone else mentioned in a review, the information given by the MT50 is more than I expected. One note, I am not sure I would use this controller with Li-ion batteries. It claims compatibility but Li-ion batteries require a complete off condition for the charger when the batteries reach full state. I have seen no indication in the documentation that this controller does this.
