Would it not be cheaper and just as effective buying a 24pack of the foam and a cardboard box?

Sure if you can find cardboard that is 1/4 in thick or greater. I am not sure that any cardboard would dampen sound as well as this material though. Might be worth a try.

Will a Blue Snowball mic fit into this?

Yes, I have both products. The Blue Snowball fits perfectly. There's spare space on the sides and on the top of the mic.

The picture shows panels on 4/5 sides. Is there another one for the 5th?

Yes. Only the bottom has no panel. This thing works just great. We used it while traveling, in a hotel room and good quite good results. Paired with a Samson Go Mic USB microphone (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001R76D42/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) we had a great portable recording solution. Add Audacity (free sound editor) and you can really work with audio recordings.

Can I fit a full sized blender in it?

The inner dimensions is 10.5 inches on all sides. If your blender is shorter than 10.5", you're okay. BTW: there is a slot on the inner back wall to pass the power cord through the insulation and actual wall itself.
