This item would not pick up the sound of water running even when place on the leaking pipe. It also would not pick up my heartbeat. Don't waste your money as to to return it to Chine is more than the value of the items. A total scam.

This is a functional microphone/amplifier/headset (or ear buds) combination. The amplifier needed about 6 hours to fully charge upon arrival. The headset is comfortable and the ear pads cover the ear. The unit worked better on the higher sensitivity setting when checking for water flow on pipes but this works as expected. One caution is that it must only be used for legal purposes, as the microphone could allow conversations to be heard through walls or drain pipes in some circumstances. Ideal for leak detection on water mains and pipes.

I had a water leak in the line from the street meter to the house. Was able to isolate the leak with cut-off valves to somewhere in about 250 feet of pipe buried 18 inches deep. OK so walked out the pipe and there was no indication on the surface, by either sight or sound, the location of the leak. OK ordered this water leakage detection unit from Amazon. It came with no directions per-se, usable anyway. OK so the idea behind this device is you place it on a pipe and can hear the liquid flowing. The water meter spinning told me that! There is also a pencil shaped device that can be dropped in a hole to listen. Now what am I suppose to do dig holes every 3 feet or so and listen? If I get that close to the leak there will be mud. I found the leak by trial and error with a shovel and post hole diggers. Yes there was mud! Kindly re-boxed and sent the device back to Amazon for a refund. This device has a niche but finding a water leak in a pipe 1.5 feet below the surface is not it!

I could hear water running when I put the probe right on the pipe but not underground. Maybe I just couldn't figure out how to work it. It just sounded like static all the time. I really wish it would have worked better than it did.

I purchased this device to aide in irrigation system leak isolation. It is poorly documented in written English. This is essentially an electronic audio microphone and amplifier outputting into a headset mounted ear phones. It has an adjustable gain range with a nonlinear automatic gain control or AGC. The AGC helps to ease the impact on the ears of the user when first applying the contact microphone to monitor the sounds of water passage. The contact mike has a flexible pin probe slightly sticking out of one side of the probe. If you use the other of side this probe you get poor selectivity of the mechanical surface for sound pickup. There is also a tubular probe that can be used to probe into limited space to sample sounds of mechanical nature. This tubular probe is not intended to be poked into the ground so this was not used for my application. As others have stated, all audible sounds are picked up and amplified so that the user can detect differences in sound levels and modulation. Turbulent flow of water in a PVC pipe is easily sensed by the user but not so much a laminar flow. My requirement was to selectively dig down to the piping or control valves and probe to find the source of a leak in my irrigation . The sounds of the flow of water are easiest to detect where piping changes direction or at constrictions. However due to the AGC it was difficult to detect when getting closer to the leak source. It requires frequent turning off and on the water source just to be sure it is not some other ambient noise that is being heard in the ear phones. In my case I was chasing ambient wind noises on the same level as my half gallon per minute leak noise level. I never could tell if I was getting closer to the leak source while selectively digging up my yard. I had to get a professional to get the job done.
