Novecento nasce su un piroscafo, il Virginian, dove viene cresciuto da uno dei marinai senza mai scenderne. Durante la sua infanzia scopre un talento innato per il pianoforte: attraverso i tasti non genera soltanto musica, racconta storie.Novecento vive la sua vita attraverso quella di tutti i viaggiatori che incontra, conosce il mondo grazie ai loro racconti, ma è attanagliato dalla paura di tutto ciò che va oltre la piccola nave su cui è nato. La musica è il suo rifugio, il suo sfogo, ciò che gli permette di esprimersi come nient'altro.La sua storia è raccontata da Baricco attraverso un monologo in grado di far sorridere, piangere e commuovere allo stesso tempo; è uno di quei racconti che fisicamente si termina di leggere ma mentalmente non si finisce mai del tutto.Un libro breve ma toccante, che si prende un pezzo del tuo cuore. Consigliatissimo!

I love this book and I love the film. It stays with me, makes me smile and makes me sad sometimes. Novecento is an extraordinary character, strong and true to himself. I love his reasons for not getting off the ship - the world is infinite and he would drown in it, but the piano keyboard is finite and on this he can create an infinite variety of music. Novecento cannot live in a world of infinite choice, it would destroy him. He needs boundaries to survive. I have lost my well read copy of the book and so am re-ordering it just to read it yet again. The Italian is lovely, very colloquial and not too challenging. Funny too.
