How soft is the lining?

It is not soft but it is smoother than the outside. It does protect the screen.

Does it cover both back and the screen , opening like abook

It is a notebook style case and covers the front when closed. When you close it the display is turned off.

Will this fit kindle basic 2022?

It fits the newest Paperwhite. You could check the specs and see, but the fit probably is off. I think the basic is a little smaller and the button placement might be different.
