so is the gold meant to rub off so easily with a sponge???

Never tried rubbing it with a sponge. I have been using this lovely little teapot every morning now for well over a year and it looks as attractive as the day I bought it. I thoroughly recommend this item. Makes a perfect rooibos cuppa for me.
