You can use either bud on its own you're not limited to one or the other

My new headphones have a static noise whenever I play anything . Can I fix via settings, or just have to return?

Not had any such noise with my set, I think they must be faulty, so if I was you I would return them. Must say I've been really impressed with my ones, if fact bought another pair for my son, who's also very happy with them. Sorry I couldn't be of more help
