Simple and elegant.
It's exactly as it looks on the picture. The button that pushes the top back makes it easier to use. It's nice enough to look at and to be displayed. Overall, a good quality.

My Review
My opinion...I like the Abacus, it is well made except for the finish. I have the 13 bar one and I don't know why they need the 17 or 23 bar ones but maybe I am wrong, this one is just the right size for me. What I don't like is the black shiny beads, they are to shiny and they are really hard to see them unless the abacus is on a white surface as they show on their page, and if you look at the pictures that is what it is like. A brown or a black that is not as shiny would really help. The four lighter beads are not as dark as they show, they are more of an orange and are distracting and should be dark like shown in the picture. But overall I like it and will enjoy using it. Another buyer posted this but it will help you to learn the Abacus... Type in or copy and paste ABACUS: MYSTERY OF THE BEAD in the address bar. I downloaded it. Also try “Learn Clue” and “The HEV Project” on YT. Update: I returned this, not because something is wrong with it but because the black beads made it hard for me to see the beads as they were too shiny. I purchased one with white beads.

Great Value!
Hard to dislike anything about a tool that functions this well for the money. No, it's not stained nor sealed, on the inner surfaces, that would have added a little cost. Wisely it has two rubber "feet" on the corners of one side, and one center on the other - whether they're accounting for imperfections on your surface or mfg. imperfections, who knows - but a 3 legged stool always sits flat. The instructions do differ slightly from the product, but not really annoying. e.g. The instructions note using the pins for place indicator on the rod, not between. This unit has a lighter bead for that every third rod, and the pins are instead between - so the pins are like commas/decimals; I like it that way. The reset seems unnecessary - again the the instructions differ recommending instead an index finger ran between beam and the heaven beads after tilting them all 'down' - however it works surprisingly well despite looking a bit weak. The book's method is quite simple, and rather satisfying too. Whether this will be better or worse than a 10bead frame for youth, time will tell. I do like the compact footprint of the soroban, and the extra layer of mental math (for the 5s) may pay dividends if it doesn't first add too much confusion.

Nice abacus - Instructions are wrong, intentionally confusing, and should be immediately discarded
Excellent little abacus. 5 stars for the actual product when taking into account price. However, whomever wrote or translated the instruction manual did so with a very clear intention of confusing and discouraging a Western reader or student from learning how an abacus/soroban actually works. I won’t guess as to the underlying motivation behind creating such erroneous and inaccurate instructions, but some examples of this are: 1) using pictorials that do not match the actual abacus supplied; 2) erroneously directing the student to add an additional decimal rod without explaining why right at the beginning; 3) failing to open with basic and easy to understand simple addition using only the two right hand rods; 4) …and so on. Great product, but burn the intentionally confusing and erroneous instructions immediately upon receipt, and the person who wrote them should be ashamed. For a basic learning tutorial, one can go to Wikihow, do an online search, or purchase a properly written student tutorial.
